2 tier, 2 zone fermentation chamber build (AKA Racer X)

I finally have the set up I've always wanted. The fermenter is still going strong and can hold 2 ten gallon batches in the lower lager chamber and 2 ten gallon batches in the upper ale chamber at 45 and 65 degrees, respectively. I bought a Midea 76" 21 cu ft refrigerator/freezer to use for cold...

2020 update: The Good: The replacement circulation fan has worked great, even during heat waves in the Summer. The Bad: After almost 8 years of heavy use, one of the temp controllers finally gave out. It is an Auber SYL-4342 relay contactor. With power turned on, it looks like this and...

2 tier, 2 zone fermentation chamber build (AKA Racer X)

Update 2017 The fermenter has been heavily used and has performed well through Summer and Winter in my garage that has no temperature control. The bathroom fan that cycles cold air from the bottom chamber to the upper chamber gave out this week. The fan/motor are fine but the attachment was...

2 tier, 2 zone fermentation chamber build (AKA Racer X)

I should add that I live in Colorado and it's pretty dry here. If you live in a more humid place, you may want to install a dehumidifier rod. I sourced this one but didn't need it. I like that it comes in different lengths, depending on the chamber size...

The floors of the chambers are made of solid sheets of linoleum flooring with the edges and corners sealed with caulk. This is the paint I used inside the fermenter: http://m.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-Premium-Plus-Ultra-1-Gal-Ultra-Pure-White-Semi-Gloss-Enamel-Exterior-585001/100550162 It has held...

I've been away from brewing for awhile but now I'm back at it. I was wondering how these projects worked out. Post up!

    RIMS controller box build

The March pump flow is controlled by the ball valve on the ouput side, as it should be. Wide open, the flow is about 6 gal/min. I use a Blichmann with a false bottom. At that speed, a stuck mash is pretty common. I mash in and let the grain bed settle for 10 minutes. I then turn on the pump and...

Advice on 3 zone fermentation chamber idea

I've made 2 keezers and the coils were different in both. Check with the manufacturer or drill a test hole. You should also think about what probes and controllers to use. I prefer RTD's in thermowells but some put the probe in air or strap to the carboy. Thermowells are more accurate but can...

I haven't been around the site for awhile. Busy with other projects I guess. I like the upgrades. I think this thread is worth bringing back, now that there's a dedicated fermenter section. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f258/2-tier-2-zone-fermentation-chamber-build-aka-racer-x-377233/

Advice on 3 zone fermentation chamber idea

I would doubt you would get adequate heat transfer, especially during active fermentation and the coils, pump and water would take up a lot of room. Also, there is the potential for a serious mess, if you spring a leak. I think you would be better off with air circulating. It just so happens...
