Why does my starter look like egg drop soup?

My wife gets the credit for the egg drop soup reference. Glad to hear I don't have some kind of weird mutant yeast, its my first time using this strain. I am making a stout and when I make it in the summer I use WLP90 because of how low the ester profile is even at high temps. My ferm chamber...

Why does my starter look like egg drop soup?

So I made a starter last night. Its been going for about 18 hours. The yeast is WLP002 English Ale and it was packaged on Sept 29th. Generally before I pour my yeast out of the vial I shake it up to get all of the cells in suspension. Upon doing so this yeast was very "chunky" for lack of a...

    Another foamy pour question

its a mini fridge with the tap mounted on the door. The tap stays cold to the touch all of the tubing is inside the fridge so it at the same ambient temp as the rest of the set up. I did mean 3/16" line instead of 3/8". The tubing is in a 10" coil help in place with velcro ties so its not...

    Another foamy pour question

I am running a single keg through 10' of 3/8" beer line at 10 psi. My first pour off of the handle is ALWAYS nothing but foam. if I immediately pour a second pint I get a nice 3/4" head on the beer. I carbonate for 48 hours at 30 psi, vent all pressure, bring the beer up to 10 psi. It...

Homebrewing as a way to save money

I made the OP but never got to follow up with anything on here. I already have the equipment so those costs are already gone along with my sanity. Kids will destroy you. The whole point of this was to see if anyone pays attention to the cost of what they produce vs the cost of what they could...

Homebrewing as a way to save money

Currently my wife stays at home to care for our two children and I am the breadwinner in the family. I make a good salary but we are far from living high on the hog. I already have equipment for both all grain and kegging. Currently I spend roughly $20 per 5.5 gallon batch; I rinse and save my...

    Mint Beer?

I tried to make my own mint extract once for a mint chocolate stout and it was awful. I used fresh mint, diced and soaked in vodka. It tasted like grass clippings and toothpaste. I can not tell you the proper way to add mint to your beet, I can just tell one improper way. May the force be with you.

    tapping keg wall?

I don't think that the threads would last, but you can always run a nipple through a weldless bulkhead.

    Brewing with multiple grain bags

Its a 5 gallon bag. I am just stupid. I had the bag crammed full. It was on the verge of ridiculous. Once the grain absorbed the water it was even worse. You could see the mesh physically straining to contain the grain. It could be a difference in brands of bags. These were blue hawk paint bags...

    Brewing with multiple grain bags

Has anyone tried using multiple bags for better efficiency for larger grain bills? The reason I ask is that with my normal cooler set up I generally hit the 85% range with my efficiency. I recently did a few BIAB style brews and my efficiency was comparable but each batch had small grain...
