Stainless steel won't come clean? (black residue)

Thanks for the suggestion! I should have mentioned that I turned to the trusty BKF for a patch to test it out. Same problem... I wouldn't have thought so. The paper towel isn't as hard as the metal so cannot abrade it. I did the same test on my HLT and BK and got clean results despite vigorous...

Stainless steel won't come clean? (black residue)

Hi all I've spent the last two days soaking and scrubbing a brand new SS Brewtech 1 bbl unitank and I can't seem to remove this black residue on the interior. It's invisible to look at (it looks lovely) but if you scrub the inside with a white tissue it comes out with black on it. I've soaked...

    Cleaning a plate chiller system

Thanks for the feedback guys, very helpful. I'm using camlocks on all of the tubing and they seem ideal. I've placed a hop filter on the input of the pump and a valve on the output. As I plan to recirculate (drop temp with chiller to 75C ish) and whirlpool there's a connection (and a valve) to...

    Cleaning a plate chiller system

Hi guys I've just moved from an immersion chiller to a plate chiller/pump system, partly out of curiosity but also to be able to effectively whirlpool in the kettle. I understand that it's standard practice to backflush cleaning fluid through the system but I wondered if, as a final step...

    Onion aftertaste!

Interesting! I checked the recipe for this batch and sure enough, Summit was the bittering hop. Strange how it doesn't come through when drinking it but only as a kind of after shadow. Think I'll stick to something cleaner for bittering...

Plastic Liquid Disconnect... Green residue? Patina? Finish worn off?

There's no sign of any CMB branding, just the letter "S" inside a cog on the side. Guessing this must be a generic Chinese version. Lesson learned!

    Onion aftertaste!

Hi guys I'll probably sound crazy asking this but have any of you ever noticed an onion/garlic aftertaste when re-using a beer glass (for water)? I've never detected onion/garlic in any of my beers but if I've had a homebrew in a glass and then I rinse it out and fill with water -...

Plastic Liquid Disconnect... Green residue? Patina? Finish worn off?

Not sure where the OP bought theirs from but I picked up mine from Keg Kingdom (UK website). Very disappointing...

Plastic Liquid Disconnect... Green residue? Patina? Finish worn off?

I was just about to post a question asking about this! My disconnects are of a similar age and starting to show patches of black and green. Can they be cleaned up or do they need to be chucked out? :( Doesn't seem very long for them to have lasted...

Looking for the "Perfect" Craft Brew Pub in London

There are some great pubs in London but you might need to travel a bit further to find the better ones. The area you're staying in is lovely but I never ventured that way for beers. If you head to Camden then there's a Brewdog bar, which serves Brewdog and other guest beers. Probably the best...

    Homemade PBW Recipe

It was powdered citric acid. It looked white when I added it but there was clearly some reaction taking place as it turned yellow and clumped. Seems to clean fine although there's a load of strange white gunk that floats to the top in the liquid

    Homemade PBW Recipe

Thanks, that's good to hear. Will try it on some kitchen gear before risking it in any of the brewing equipment...

    Homemade PBW Recipe

Hey guys, I tried to make a homemade version of PWB and ended up with the attached fail! Not sure what happened so would welcome any thoughts. I mixed sodium percarbonate with trisodium phosphate (we don't have TSP/90 in the UK) in a 70:30 ratio. I then added around 5% of the weight in citric...
