    Extremely slow fermentation

No starter. I did rehydrate though but that might not of been enough. Good advice though, next time I'll try a starter.

    North American Cider apple varieties

Last year I was a bit late in the season when I went apple picking. So I pretty much got the left overs. The juice was mostly Cortland, some Spartan and a bit of Empire. The cider ended good but not great. It was lacking aroma I would say. I feel that Cortland is good base juice but I think I'll...

    Extremely slow fermentation

It's been pretty hot around here lately. I keep my carboys in the garage where it's cooler but I'm sure it's been over 65 F in there for at least the last month. My past experience with other yeasts was also a couple of weeks to go down to 1.010. It was the first time I used Notty but also the...

    Extremely slow fermentation

A few months ago I started a 5 gallons batch using Costco brand "fresh pressed" apple juice. I've been experimenting with different yeasts before apple season. For this one I used Nottingham, which came highly recommended by quite a few of you. It started out pretty good, took a bit longer than...

Unlimited apples, but no press or juicer :(

Didn't give it much thought actually. My other hobby is woodworking, so I didn't even consider plastic. But I would imagine it's easier to clean and maintain, but might be more expensive than wood.

I have to agree with gregbathurst here, it is primarily a hobby and so you have to invest a little. And even if you don't consider cider making a hobby you'd like to pursue, a well made press and grinder will last you a lifetime. You'll get thousands of dollars worth of cider ...that you made...

    North American Cider apple varieties

Apple season is still several months away but I already can't wait to get the grind and press going for next summers cider. In the mean time I'm trying to locate good apples for cider making. Most of the orchards around here offer mostly eating/cooking apples but I figure some might be better...

Cider aged 7 months, lacking taste. Would more ageing be beneficial?

Thanks for all the tips guys! It's almost 2 weeks later now and I tried another bottle last night. It seemed better, you could taste a bit more of the apple tartness. It's not fantastic but better. So I think I'll slowly pick at my batch this summer and see if it keeps getting better with time...

Cider aged 7 months, lacking taste. Would more ageing be beneficial?

Yeah I've read good things about Nottingham and other ale yeasts for cider, after the fact. I figured that might of been it. Before bottling my SG was at about 1.002 ...pretty dry but I wouldn't of minded if it had flavour. Sweetening definitely sounds like something I should try, especially if...

Cider aged 7 months, lacking taste. Would more ageing be beneficial?

Hi there, Been reading quite a lot on this forum for the past year but never posted. But now I am in need of some advice. I've made my first cider last October, with the apples I could find this late in the season (My grinder and press took longer to build than expected). It was mostly...
