    Tried two AG batches with horrible efficiencies

    Definitely a +1 on the crush. I increased my efficiency by 8% (72% to 80%) just by doing a finer crush. The key is finding a crush which increases your efficiency but does not lead to a stuck sparge. Cheers!

    You are fine using the Munton's Plain Dark DME for your starter. Just cold crash the starter for 24 hours before you start your brew day. Then just decant the beer off the top of your starter and pitch into your carboy. Cheers!
