Poll: Do you have, or plan to get, an electric car?

not in the winter. like i said 65km trip, needed to be charged at the end of that, and the way back had a low battery warning and reduced speed limiter on. Even Audi thought there was something wrong. They took the vehicle back.

Poll: Do you have, or plan to get, an electric car?

Not for where I live. -40 winters turn the range into under 50% at best, and I do a lot of long distance driving. Horror stories about people having them here and doing the full butt clench trying to get home at night with the low battery warning and the speed restriction on. Boss lady had a...

    Any canadians growing hops

grew them in Winnipeg for years and did absolutely nothing to protect them. Zero issue with winterkill. Issue I had was when it was time to get rid of them, they are harder to kill than grow. They develop a huge taproot that goes down several feet, and it you don't get it all, they will grow...

Preparing first year hops for the winter

When I did grow them, got a lot colder than any of you. -40 C in the winter. They came back every year. Hops are very hardy plants, actually when I wanted them out, they are harder to kill than grow. I did absolutely nothing to mine and they were fine.

    Hops trouble

Downey and powdery mildew should show a sign of fuzz near the infected area.

Does dastatic power of whole pale malt degrade with age?

Big boys like Bud in North America are almost always sitting on at least a year of barley just in case of a worldwide crop failure, and they still do an amazing job of making a beer.

    Hops or a weed?

First two look like red root pigweed, get them out ASAP, they produce seeds like crazy and will take over.

    Grain storage?

I would not use diatomaceous earth. Yes, that is what it is intended for, but if used incorrectly, ie too much, when you add this malt to water, you are making clay. I have rejected malt samples because of excessive DE used. Also, this only works if the bugs are active, DE causes the bugs to...

    Grain storage?

Bugs are not going to infest dry grain. If you have a bug problem, they are the least of your worries. And the grain bugs that we are talking about are probably not an issue in your area anyway, unless you are on or close to a farm.

Why barley takes longer to sprout?

DO NOT put them in air tight. And for all the malt houses that I have been in, I have not seen one in an air tight room, in fact every one of them is fully ventilated, forced air, and misted if the grain bed dries out. I can see by air tight they mean controlled air, but like I said, they are...

    All Grain or kegging?

I have done both in several ways each. 1) I would not go back from kegging, but I would not go back to home built freezer conversion. Now have a purpose built kegerator, and love it. I can't see having more than 2 kegs on the go at any time, plus have locals in cans, and if needed still have...

    Acrospire ideal lenght

http://howtobrew.com/book/section-2/what-is-malted-grain/malt-types-and-usages probably more than you are going to do at home, but this pretty much covers all of them. Each individual malt company will have a slight variation of each, but they are all basically the same thing as long as they...

    Acrospire ideal lenght

Ideally, the pros stop it at 75% of the kernel length, but they are malting selected malt barley, all 1 variety, and it should be performing all the same. Letting it go more than that, the grain starts to consume itself (over modified), so you will loose extract. Less than 50% it will be under...

How i made my first wheat malt

What you did is just fine. Grains will pick up a musty smell, sometimes it is a nice fermenting smell, other times is can be a bit sour. Unless you see fuzz growing on the kernels, I really wouldn't be too worried. If it gets to be a really bad rotten garbage or sewer smell, or a chemical...
