You could put a piece of tubing on the spigot, lift the tubing above the liquid level inside the anvil(or clamp it to the top of the anvil somehow), and open the spigot. That will show you how high the liquid level is inside. If you had some marking on the outside to indicate your pre-boil...
I wouldn't be using them to carbonate a 5 gallon keg. I use the 5 liter mini kegs. Also, I usually prime the kegs but would like to be able to force carbonate at least 1 so I can drink it while the others are naturally carbonating.
