What's the worst craft brew (commercial) you've had?

Of recent memory I thought Shipyard Mint Chocolate Stout was a mess. Way too spearminty in a toothpaste kind of way, an unpleasant hot alcohol bite, and excessive anise. Didn't mix well together. Bottle was nice though

    New to AG

I used a cooler for a mash tun at first. Pros were good temperature control, cons were significantly increased brewing time, more equipment to deal with. I now do BIAB. Pros for this are huge time savings (at least 1/3 less than a cooler mash tun time), much less stuff to clean. Cons are...

Does my home brew make me look fat?

Alcohol is metabolized to acetaldehyde and then acetic acid and/or acetate and is subsequently excreted in the urine. None of these are sugars, which have at least five carbon atoms. Alcohol has two, so the body would have to work (burn energy) to make ethanol into a sugar (which, to my...

    S-04 fermented a bit warm...opinions?

75-76 actual ferm temp isn't horrible but I'd venture a guess that there's mild ester funk action going on. But you caught it pretty quickly so it could be minimal. Only one way to find out!

    Chloramines?

Well based on these accounts I will dump it if there's that off-taste in two weeks of conditioning. Do you guys think it is still OK to brew with this water if I 1.) use a carbon filter and 2.) treat with K-meta? Here is a pdf of our local water report...

    Chloramines?

Brewed my first batch (DIPA) in a while yesterday with tap water and I didn't look at the water chemistry beforehand. Turns out there are 3.2 ppm chloramine in the muni supply here and I did notice a slight plasticky taste in the wort when it was hot but was less when cool. It is fermenting now...

    AC Fermentation chamber build

Thanks man, cheers. Brewing a DIPA at the moment. Do you know of any NC group grain buys?

    AC Fermentation chamber build

Never heard of that until now. Looks impressive! I see the BrewPi device and software, is the "cheap" brewpi a different setup? This definitely looks like the next level for much more accurate temperatures. Appreciate the suggestion! Are you using the brewpi?

    AC Fermentation chamber build

Thanks! :mug::mug: I'm hoping I could lager in winter but temps will get a bit low for ales. Maybe I will ferment ales inside during winter? What are your thoughts on 63-65 for ale temps? My target is 68-70 in the carboy. The thermometer sits in a 1L jar of water

    AC Fermentation chamber build

It's been fired up a few days now with the probe in a 1L jar of water. I'd say it turns on every 30 mins depending on how hot it is outside. Only "problem" is that water leaks from the unit and I have to keep a pan beneath it so the wood doesn't rot. Johnson temp control unit. I ripped apart...

    AC Fermentation chamber build

Well one pic was sideways, apologies. I used a 5000 btu window ac unit from my Brooklyn apartment and 3 layers of .75" styrofoam to insulate. Insulating is a pain in the @ss and took the most time. It doesn't help that I'm impatient and NC is hot and humid. Johnson control unit. AC set to kick...

    AC Fermentation chamber build

Hi everyone, been out of the game for a while because life was a little crazy and brewing is nearly impossible in NYC. Just bought a house in NC and built a fermentation chamber to step up my game a little with regards to my brewing process. I think fermentation temperatures played a huge part...
