My braggot smells and tastes horrible!

Good points. The honey tasted delicious prior to fermentation, so I'm not sure that would be it. The high temp does worry me though. I couldn't really taste any fusels, but it's entirely possible I missed it. I've never heard of the other compounds you listed, do any of them match the...

My braggot smells and tastes horrible!

I suppose that's possible. Although since the recipe was only adapted to make it a mead, I would assume that the ingredients would be copisetic on at least the original recipe. Unless hops react negatively to honey or nutrients there must have been something else wrong. Bad hops perhaps?

My braggot smells and tastes horrible!

It was started on November 16, so it hasn't been long. I do plan on aging it for sure, I just wanted to get a second opinion on how much the flavor would dissipate. If you can get past the bitter hoppy flavor, it actually tastes wonderful. Has a nice thick malty character. So hopefully it...

My braggot smells and tastes horrible!

I've been making mead for long enough to know what I'm doing, so I felt confident enough to pull off a braggot. The recipe is a recipe for an oatmeal stout. The only thing I added was nutrients and honey. So I don't think the recipe is the issue. Perhaps you have some idea as to what caused the...

My braggot smells and tastes horrible!

This batch is a bit over 7 gallons. 1.13 is was the SG, and it's finished at 1.042 (higher than I planned), but I think the caramelized honey and high mash temp of the grain introduced more unfermentable sugar than was planned. I'm positive it isn't infected. There's no signs indicating so and...

My braggot smells and tastes horrible!

Hello everyone! I recently started a braggot. I started the batch on 11/16, and it burned through the fermentation insanely fast. I was degassing and adding nutrients after 48 hours (standard practice with mead) and noticed it felt a little warm. I checked the temp and it had jumped up to 81...

My Braggot Tastes and Smells Horrible!

Hello everyone! I recently started a braggot (mead made with grains and hops). I started the batch on 11/16, and it burned through the fermentation insanely fast. Degassing after repitching

Hello everyone, I'm working on my first batch, and I had a sluggish fermentation. A local meadery recommended I repitch the yeast. So I did a starter with EC-1118. My question is, should I aerate and degas like I did in the beginning? I degassed daily until half the sugar was consumed. I don't...

I'm afraid I ruined my first batch.

Great thanks. I'll let it ride out and see how it goes. I'm seeing activity, it's just not as vigorous as I was expecting.

I'm afraid I ruined my first batch.

Thanks all for the replies, I ended up racking out the plastic and all is well. I'll definately be buying some new equipment. However, I do have a followup question. I think I pitched the wrong yeast. My goal was to ferment nearly all of the residual sugar out and get below 1 brix. Not...

I'm afraid I ruined my first batch.

Got the spoon at a local brewing store, but I was on a budget, so I bought my bucket at Walmart for $3. I guess now I know. In the future I'm going to use a higher quality bucket and a plastic spoon. On the bright side, I racked it off the plastic, and everything looks good. Fermenting well...

I'm afraid I ruined my first batch.

There are scratches. Thanks for the heads up. I'll thow it out and get a plastic spoon.

I'm afraid I ruined my first batch.

I ended up just racking it. Still had some plastic in it, but I fished it out. I just pray that it doesn't get infected.

I'll give that a try. Thank you!

I'm afraid I ruined my first batch.

I mixed up my first batch last night. As soon as I got done, I noticed thin white strands. Originally I thought my dog had magically gotten her hair in my must, but upon further inspection, I realized it was plastic. I used a metal spoon in my mixing bucket, and it shaved peices of plastic...
