You could try warming it up a few degrees, maybe it got too cold for the yeast? Also maybe give it a gentle swirl to try to rouse the yeast off the bottom and back up into suspension.
Edit, also if it's sitting at 1.03 I wouldn't be surprised if there was little to no karusen or visible signs...
Sorry it took so long, didn't have an (responsible) opportunity to try them side by side until last night.
As expected I really didn't get any hops out of either of them. Still tasty though.
Cool it, take a gravity reading to see if it was finished and taste it to see if it's a phenolic nightmare. If you're not hurting for space you can always cool it repitch and let it sit for an extended period of time to see if the heart can clean it up.
I've read a lot of threads from people...
And that's fine. That makes sense to me. Your other post just confused me because it implied there was no difference. There IS a difference. It's just not reliably detectable with the sensitivity of our equipment and margin of error.
Which also makes sense why it's easier to add it to the og...
I think you misunderstood my points. I know there is no correction factor needed for Hydrometers like there is for refractometers. Another poster was implying that the alcohol has no effect on the hydrometer. I'm simply saying it does by lowering the gravity of the liquid.
If I add 15 pounds...
That doesn't make sense to me. If there is more alcohol in the solution the density will be less and thus the hydrometer should sit lower in the solution.
It could be as the poster above mentioned that the actual difference between where the hydrometer is sitting is so small as to be...
To be honest I can't say. I don't think i did but I'm still new to this and my sense of taste and smell is less than stellar (a running joke between my wife and i). It would be fun to do a small batch with and without the Northern Brewer hops to see if it made a discernible difference...
Sure thing, I'll share the first one I brewed, it's a little friendlier if you're not huge on peat and/or smoke. This one definitely was dark, not amberish. So adjust accordingly but this was quite dark. I like dark and roasty though so I brew a lot of that style.
I'll post the beersmith values...
Isn't the hydrometer affected by the amount of alcohol in solution? The more alcohol the lower it will show? I thought that's why the refractometers don't work without a correction factor for FG? Alcohol is less dense than water is it it not, so it would stand to reason that if other volume was...
I brewed up a nice big Barleywine two months ago (it's sitting in secondary until October) and I used some corn sugar additions in the fermenter because I read that it is better to add them on the back end of fermentation rather than at the start. This will of course produce more alcohol and a...
Your post really struck me because I went down this same path. Smokey and peaty scotches are my favorite scotches so I thought I would try out some Peat Smoked Malt.
My first recipe used 1/2 pound (3% grain bill) and I got a light smokey and peaty flavor but I wanted more (everyone who tried...
