    Adding fruit to secondary

I'm making an Imperial Raspberry Red Ale in 2 weeks, and I have 30oz of Raspberries in the freezer right now. I'm not entirely sure how to go about taking care of them when the time comes to add them, but I'd also like any input on why in the secondary? I'm guessing secondary helps bring out the...

    What are you drinking now?

I'm drinking a High Tai from Torn Label from KC, MO.

What to do about our yeast situation?

We got the yeast from the home brew store. It's the only one open in town right now that I know of. I don't really think they take good care of their liquid yeast. But if we have to pitch more, I'm ok with getting another vial. My friend said he'd do a gravity reading soon. So we'll see what...

What to do about our yeast situation?

It's sitting at 70 degrees. When it was pitched it was in the mid 60's.

New brewer here, just completed my first batch and have questions.

I've done 4 extract batches. But how many gallons did you start off with in the boil? I typically do 3 gallons in the kettle, and as long as your boil isn't overly aggressive you shouldn't lose too much liquid. After adding the extracts, I usually end up with exactly 5 gallons after adding the...

What to do about our yeast situation?

My friend and I brewed up a Tank 7 clone last weekend. Pitched 2 vials of WLP670 white labs yeast. It's being kept at his house in a fermentation bucket. Problem is, he's told me there's never been any airlock movement. After 4 days, I told him, ok, open the lid real quick and see if there's...

Quick question - Taking wort for a car ride?

I've considering doing this because my friend has the outdoor turkey fryer at his house, so I was gonna brew there, and take it back to my place. Haven't done it yet, but like others said, don't pitch the yeast until you're back home, and buckle up the carboy for the ride home.

Experimenting with the Northern Brewer Chinook IPA

So today was drinking day, and I really disliked the aftertaste flavor I got off this. The hops didn't come out like I wanted, and it lacked much of an orange taste despite an orangy aroma. Personally, I didn't like my beer for this one, something was wrong. But my friends and wife told me...

Experimenting with the Northern Brewer Chinook IPA

I decided to just move it the secondary today. The guy from my HBS talked me into it. It wasn't a big deal. It allowed me to clean out the main fermenter to prep it for my next batch, which I'll be boiling up on Saturday. Going with an American Wheat this time around. I'll have to bump this...

Experimenting with the Northern Brewer Chinook IPA

Today is day 8. FG is 1.006. Took a sip from the hydrometer tube, and it tasted pretty decently. Although I had just brushed my teeth, so the first taste gave that strange orange juice/toothpaste flavor. I think after carbonation it'll be solid and more of the hops will come through. So far I...

    My FG sample

Ha. I've only ever done 1 hydrometer reading before and when I read your post, and saw the pic I was over here thinking I misread mine last week.

Experimenting with the Northern Brewer Chinook IPA

I've talked with some IPA "experts" and they all say it isn't necessary for the secondary, so I'm fine with skipping it this time around. Maybe day 8 is too early to take a hydrometer reading. I want to bottle on June 2nd so that I can begin the next batch on Saturday June 3rd. June 2nd...

Experimenting with the Northern Brewer Chinook IPA

Thanks for the positive news. It doesn't have any strange smells coming out. It smells like an IPA. Luckily the weather has calmed down a bit lately so it's been easier to maintain the 66-68 degree temp. So now I'm thinking about getting a hydrometer reading on Tuesday and seeing how close it is...

Experimenting with the Northern Brewer Chinook IPA

Today is day 6, and after a pretty vigorous fermentation the krausen has begun to fall off. Something I didn't learn more about until recently is that I needed to pitch the yeast just below fermentation temperature. I pitched mine at 80 degrees which could easily be why it has such a quick...
