    AHA Governing Committee 2020

I have submitted for a spot on the American Homebrewers Association Governing Committee. I would love to represent the homebrewing community on the national level, and would greatly appreciate your vote! Competition looks pretty fierce, but I believe I would be a great fit. If you are a member...

What type of whisky should I soak oak cubes in for a Wee Heavy?

I put my wee heavy into an Eagle Rare barrel with some others who brewed the same recipe. It ended up winning the wood aged category in the Kentucky State Fair homebrew competition

    Some sort of error?

That would be terrible, but pretty funny. I had a similar thing happen once. I was searching for an item, and found it on the website for a different product from the same company. It was ridiculously cheap, so I ordered a few. I ended up getting a call from the owner of the company, who said he...

Any outdoor brewers attract honeybees when brewing?

That's very interesting. Thanks for the info! I'm actually planning to start beekeeping in the next year or so, and this thread had me wondering if it would just add frustration to brew days!

Any outdoor brewers attract honeybees when brewing?

Haha. Me too! My last brew I found 2 bees in my BK. I named it Shakespearean Stout (two bee or not two bee)

    Reducing ABV

The boiling point of ethyl alcohol is 173.3° F. Hold it at about 180° F and you should get rid of some alcohol pretty quickly, although I'm sure of the rate of loss. You could even put a little water in ahead of time to account for volume lost in the process.

    Reducing ABV

After fermentation, heat it up to drive off some of the alcohol. If you are bottling, add some more yeast and continue as usual.

    Hello from Michigan

We lived in Dearborn Heights for a while, as well as Plymouth and Canton before that. Lots of good breweries have been started in the area in recent years!

Best type of filter for a DIY mash tun?

I started out with a braided hose attached to a tee at the valve. It goy mangled pretty easily and almost immediately had a few gaps large enough for grains to get through. I recently switched to a bazooka screen and am happy with it so far. I use a rectangular cooler FWIW.
