    5 gallon carboy

I have been making cider in 1 gallon glass and plastic bottles for the past few months (with success, thanks to this group). If I want to make it in a 5 gallon carboy, is it the same process and just multiply everything by 5 (sugar, yeast, nutrient, etc). How much head space should be left...

    How soon should I bottle?

This was way more information that I bargained for. But GREAT information! Thank you so much!

    Sulfur smell in cider

Update. Thank you all for your help on this. So, I actually believe that the sulfur smell was due to the back carbonation not being finished. Of those 8 bottles, they became less and less smelly as I opened them. Next question about the yeast nutrient. I used one of the ones mentioned here...

    How soon should I bottle?

Rookie question but... How soon after fermenting do I have to bottle apple cider? if it runs long, should I do anything extra? Cheers! :bigmug:

    Sulfur smell in cider

I should have mentioned this as well.... I made two gallons in the last batch. The first gallon (sulfur smell), I was going for something citrus-y. I zested an orange and boiled the zest with some sugar water before fermenting. I wonder if that could have led to the smell. The second gallon...

    Sulfur smell in cider

Thank you videojunki1208, Here's a crazy question (and please excuse my ignorance on the subject). Do those Brewers Best Carbonation Drops work with cider? You said beer, but I can't imagine that they wouldn't. Thank you

    Sulfur smell in cider

Thank you for this. I never knew about the yeast nutrient. Can you recommend one? When does that get used? Also, would you recommend a different product for back carbonating besides brown sugar?

    Sulfur smell in cider

Thank you. This is interesting. Thank you. This is interesting. The first batch I made, it finished fermenting in about 10 days. I bottled it. And it was drinkable in days, albeit not too bubbly.

    Sulfur smell in cider

Hi Gang, Bear with me on this one. About a month ago, I made a batch of hard cider using Whole Foods Organic Apple Juice. I made two gallons. My process was to put in one campden tablet (crushed) per gallon, wait two days, yeast it (I added some sugar to one of the gallons). When it...

    Fermenting in store bottle

Understood. To be honest. It's not about not having the glass jugs. It's about dealing with sterilizing and then cleaning, etc. My feeling is that if I'm already buying the juice in a plastic jug, why not ferment in there, then when I siphon it out, just toss it with the rest of the...

    Fermenting in store bottle

I should clarify my initial post. The two times I made hard cider, I have Crushed one campden tablet and then waited two days to add the yeast.

    Fermenting in store bottle

Hi Gang, So, out of an effort to achieve efficiency, I realized that if I could ferment the juice in the bottles that it comes in, I can save the effort of sterilizing glass gallons before and after fermenting, etc. One of the issues here is that these come in 96oz plastic containers. Has...

First timer, so go easy on me.

Hi Gang, So, I bottled my first batch, and was planning to cold shock it in the fridge. Turns out it doesn't all fit. The fridge is small, I didn't make that much. I added back about 3/4c of apple juice to each gallon to try to fizz it up before bottling and used swing-top bottles. Can I...
