First Brewing Attempt... How should I cool wort - already in fermenter

Couple options: I used to pour the wort over 8lbs of ice which averaged out to about ~80F. Then I added the rest of the water to bring it up to ~5 gallons. This always got me really close to 70F. The other option is to get a wort chiller: http://www.homebrewery.com/images/wort-chiller.jpg...

8 hours delay before pitching yeast...

So as I was about to use my wort chiller last night I found a hole. Something I can patch, but still unusable right now. I ended up cooling it down to about 160 in my sink by packing my pot with all the ice in the fridge. At that point I decided I had no other choice but to dump it in my...

    Wort chiller design

Damn...works out to about 45 pounds of ice. Going by the differences in heat of fusion (333J/g) and heat capacity of water (4.18J/g*degreeC) I didn't think that would have been an issue. Those pesky laws of thermodynamics are a pain. We used a somewhat similar design to cool keg beer at one...

    Wort chiller design

I've been designing a wort chiller in my head for a while now (finally switched to 5 gallon boils). I had one of those "eureka" moments this afternoon and have been trying to blow holes in this design for the last couple hours. I was wondering if anyone else would mind taking a look...

how best to clean a dirty blow off tube

Just to add to this (assuming you're using plastic): I built a similar one to what EvilTOJ described. Start with a Male Pipe Thread x Barb connector which looks like this: http://www.berryhilldrip.com/images/DSC00052.JPG On the threaded end you need a seal. In the plumbing section they have...

    More Beginner Questions

Sorry about starting another thread but while I was looking around I realized there's a lot more I don't understand. How do you aerate the wort? I just let it sit there as the wort is cooling cooling. It seems to imply blowing air into it somehow maybe? Is this critical or does it just speed...

    Bubbler Problems

Makes sense, I should be able to adapt that to my system for tomorrows brew. Thanks for the help everyone!

    Bubbler Problems

Thanks for the reply, although I didn't understand most of it. What's Krausen and what does a blow off tube do?

    Bubbler Problems

I'm in the middle of my second batch and I've ran into bubbler problems both times. About 24 hours into fermentation beer has been getting sucked up into the bubbler. The first time I just cleaned it out and stuck it back in with no problems. With the new batch I didn't catch it as quick and...
