Using a plastic food drum for fermentation in a nano-brewery?

We are on the verge on signing a lease and starting a nano / brewpub. I am currently building the 55gl drum system modeled after my sankey single tier system I built 6 years ago. I have procured some 55gl poly drum and this is what led me to this thread. I like the idea of liners, cheaper...

Beer Recipator / hbd.org not responding

Just found this: http://hbddotorg.blogspot.com/ Looks like HBD has gone bankrupt and is moving from the commercial connection to a hosted solution... whatever that means. Basically, the well ran dry: Date: Sat, 9 Aug 2014 19:56:25 -0400 From: Patrick Babcock <patrick.babcock at...

Beer Recipator / hbd.org not responding

Still not working, this is not good. I have been using this site for 7 years and always suspected that it would vanish some day since it seems to be a ghost town. Nothing has been updated since I started using it...

    Wood in Beer (not Oak)

Juglone, it is a toxin to many plants and the saw dust can affect horses. Juglone is produced by Black Walnut and Butternut trees and is poorly soluble in water and only the roots carry high conentrations. Since Butternut was used in the experiment in the Sept/Oct 2012 Zymurgy article I'd say...

    Wood in Beer (not Oak)

I may be a month late but the new issue of Zymurgy has a nice article on Wood Aging. Specific to this is the passage about not raking the beer too soon due to the perceived woody flavor after a few weeks. After that harsher flavor comes sweetness from the wood near the 4 week mark. Patience...

    Hops from composted seeds?

Well, these do appear to have all the characteristics of the Japanese Hop. However, I may plant them and keep a close watch on it this year just in case it's a real hop. Thanks for all the replies and I will post any discoveries in the coming months.

    Hops from composted seeds?

Out of some compost I was using to start vegetables with grew a tiny plant with 3 pointed leaves, then 5 points and I thought it to be an illegal substance yet I transplanted it to make sure... Then it grew 7 points and the leave were way to fat for it to be what I originally thought. I pinched...

Plate Chillers - other than Shirron & Therminator?

I used the 50 plate chiller yesterday and as figured, it was a flawless fast chill. The shipping was faster from Germany than my order from Morebeer out of Cali!

Plate Chillers - other than Shirron & Therminator?

Lets dig it up again: I just got this in the mail today and it seems to have more surface area than the Therminator. It was $117 shipped! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370341370377&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

    Anybody Tried Fawcett Oat Malt?

I still have a ~40lbs of it, you need some? I have been thinking of an all Oat Mash for Alcohol Fuel production, just to see what happens. Other than that I have just been using it in place of Flaked oats.

    Anybody Tried Fawcett Oat Malt?

Perfect thread, I have a 55lb sack of Thomas Fawcett Oat Malt and must do something with it. I have made an Oatmeal Stout which only used a pound of it with a pound of flaked as well. I was looking to see if anyone has made an oat whiskey mash, seems plausible. I am interested in the ale...
