So my first all grain brew was this past weekend in which I did the darth vader- black ipa on this forum. My efficiency ended up around 50% with a starting OG of 1.051, where it was expected to be higher. What does this mean for my beer? I'm sure it will taste alright, but how will it differ...
Beginning of May. Been busy with school for the past 4 months but I should get some time this fall to make up for that

Can the top of the coil be above the wort during the boil? I realize efficiency would be lowered that way, but would it be any kind of risk to the wort?
My thoughts exactly. I'm just trying to figure out if I need 8 or 15 gallons for a hlt, more or less. I'm set on 15 g bk unless someone can tell me why not

For the BK it wont matter too much if the thermometer reads the temp, but i never thought of that for the HLT. I'll be batch sparging btw. What about a 15g BK and a 8 gallon HLT? Or is that too much? Basically as long as it works for both 5 and 10 gallon batches it would be ideal so I don't have...
I'm trying to put together all the gear to begin all-grain brewing By September. I currently have a converted 48-qt coleman cooler for a mash tun and I'm looking to get a BK and HLT soon. Im planning on doing 5 gallon batches, but I may consider moving to 10 gallon at some point. I enjoy all...
3/8 50' it is then I guess. There's a video on YouTube on how to make the dual coil one I'm talking about, but sounds similar to the one mentioned above. The water here can be pretty cold so I'm not too worried about that

Hey guys,
I've been looking at trying to get a wort chiller to make cooling wort more efficient. So when it comes to a wort chiller, I'm not sure what size to get. At my lhbs here in Newfoundland I can get a 3/8 50' chiller for 98.50.
I've also checked around to some plumbing supply stores...
