First Brew - AHS American Amber Ale

First Brew - AHS American Amber Ale

dogbar was right, it will increase the bitterness by decreasing the gravity of the boil. See Palmer's Hop Bittering Calculations. Diluting with more water decreases the gravity of the boil by which leads to increased the isomerization of the alpha acids, which increases bitterness. You...

First Brew - AHS American Amber Ale

That was the same kit I did for my first brew. Careful not to make the mistake I did and ferment at too high of a temperature... https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/fermentation-temperature-77f-problem-80561/ I think you can do more than 2.5 gallons if you want (though you might want someone more...

    Food poisoning from infection?

Update: I've tried both batch #1 and #2 and have no signs of food poisoning. Looks like everyone who responded has been correct - thanks for the advice which gave me the courage to try both batches again.

    Food poisoning from infection?

update: I'm trusting everyone who's responded that there's no way beer gave me food poisoning and will have another one tonight. I'm nervous. I'll let you know how it turns out.

    Food poisoning from infection?

Thanks for the tip Good to know, thanks. I won't! Want to try my potentially food poison causing batch for me? /sarcasm I'll let you know if and when I get some trade worthy batches - not sure I'm there yet. Well said. It was actually mostly throwing up - still definitely food...

    Food poisoning from infection?

Saturday morning I bottled batch #2, a Pale Rye Ale, tasted my SG sample, it looked and tasted great - no signs of infection. Saturday for lunch I had a jalapeno burger from Chili's Saturday night I tried a bottle of batch #1, an American Amber Ale, which had only been conditioning for a week...

New to Brewing in Florida.. Recommendations?

I got the kit and recipe kits from Austin Homebrew Supply (cheap flat rate shipping) - which has been great and includes everything I need I had the same temperature issues (I'm in Texas). Read the thread. The Rubbermaid with water and daily ice packs worked great.

Thinking about jumping from extract to partial mash

Yeah.... I think you're right. I'm clearly confused. Sorry about that.

Thinking about jumping from extract to partial mash

I found this helpful: Homebrew Headquarters: Partial Mash AHS has good partial mash kits: http://www.austinhomebrew.com/ And here's a good video I found helpful:

Thinking about jumping from extract to partial mash

I jumped straight in to mini-mash recipes and can testify that it's very easy (if you have a thermometer and grain bag). All my recipe kits came from Austin Homebrew Supply. It basically only requires one extra step - steeping (soaking) the grains (in a grain bag) in the range of 150-160 deg F...

temp for bottle conditioning and storage

Good to know. The Rubbermaid submersion seemed a little over the top. Thanks for the advice.

temp for bottle conditioning and storage

I'm wondering the same thing, but my room temperature is closer to 77 than 70 (I'm in Texas). Will this be too warm for bottle conditioning? Will it speed up bottle conditioning or have negative side effects? Should I use the immersion in water and ice filled Rubbermaid trick I'm using for my...
