OK anyone used an existing yeast cake at bottom of primary for next batch?

This thread is blowing my mind. So if I time it right, I can rack a batch to secondary, and pour a new batch of cooled wort right onto the yeast cake/trub? No need to go through all the yeast harvesting that I've been trying to learn?? Provided I rack to secondary right after active...

What is the formula for measuring attenuation? This thread has me worrying now about the bottles I just did yesterday...

    Where to try mead

Emergency averted. One quick email to my local homebrew shop, one quickly scored bottle of locally brewed mead. Thanks for the help!

    Where to try mead

In PA though, there are no such things. There are state run liquor stores, with controlled stock, and then beer distributors and take out places. And never the two shall meet. But Wilmington is definately closer than Baltimore! Thanks for the info!

    Where to try mead

Thanks for the info! I searched for an online source too, and came up with the same info. Though there is one place that has a vendor code to sell through PA liqour stores. I'll have to see which is quicker, finding time to drive to Baltimore, or ordering from the store.

    Where to try mead

I have a sudden personal need to try some mead. I've been thinking about trying to brew some myself. But an unexpected situation finds me desperately needing a bottle. Anyone know of any Philly local clubs, brewers, etc, that would graciously donate/trade a bottle of mead? Or an online source...

    First Batch Questions

Thanks! Thats mostly what I thought. I used White Labs English Ale liquid yeast. But the thing is, the morning after was yesterday. It still wasn't bubbling this morning. So I've naturally got the first batch fear.

    First Batch Questions

It seems like the "first batch questions" post is a obligatory thing, so here goes mine: This was my first extract brew (i've done 3 canned kits). Everything went smoothly as far as I can tell. I was brewing a MoreBeer Porter kit. I followed the instructions, except that at 30 minutes, I...

Hello Everyone, Hail from HUMBOLDT COUNTY, CA

I was in that area last month. Some of the best beer, food, and scenery ever. All those microbrews are one of the reasons I came back with a resolve to homebrew more!

First "real" homebrew, overall advice needed!

Is that deal too good to be true? I'm assuming its one of the cheaper, thin bottomed ones. But even so, its a great price. Thats just was I'm looking for, thanks!

First "real" homebrew, overall advice needed!

I was shopping for a brew pot yesterday. It seems like an important item, and a large dollar investment. Does anyone know of an affordable "entry level" pot? Is this advisable? As far as the kits, I just ordered 2 from morebeer.com. I was also looking at northernbrewers.com kits. I...

    Yeast behavior

That makes sense. I wasn't even thinking about that. Thanks!

    Yeast behavior

This is a general question. I suppose its regarding the behavior of yeast. If yeast is alive, then it should continue to convert sugars to alcohol, as long as there is sugar to be consumed, correct? So, what if you added more malt extract (a substantial amount) to either the primary or...

What would I expect if I cheated?

I botched my second brew and was tempted to dump the bottles. But I'm forcing myself to drink through the batch. (as penance perhaps?) But the longer they are in the bottles, the less horrible they taste. Maybe that's no suprise. So I would say let them sit for a couple weeks and give it...

    New kid from Philly

I have been. I work in Southampton, so I've been going to Wine, Barley and Hops in Feasterville. I've been meaning to check out the place on Sansom St, but my free time doesn't always coincide with store hours. I'm assuming thats where you go?
