    Passive Oxide Layer

Hehe. Thanks I don't know how I got like this. I think I'm obsessing so much cause I want to prove the a'hole at the LHBS wrong. But you are right. I just need to make some beer ... If it tastes like metal ... drink some more and I'll forget about it. I'll be back after my first brew.

    Passive Oxide Layer

Thanks all. I feel much better. I don't like the calcium build up though. I probably don't want to use CLR on the pot?!? I might just leave it as is. The best way to find out if it will impact the taste is to actually taste it. I'm gonna boil some water and do a taste test with spring water...

    Passive Oxide Layer

Man that SUCKS!!! I spent 2 hours and 1/2 a tank of propane to get nothing. hehe I had the water on the burner for an hour and it was at a rolling boil for about 45 min. So do you think I should was the calcium deposits off and throw it in the oven then? I'm stumped!

    Passive Oxide Layer

Hello fellow brewers this is kinda part II to my Flimsy Aluminum Turkey Fryer Pot post. After I boiled water to the brim in my pot for about 45 min, dried it and let it sit out side over night it looks like it's got a white film over it. It looks like oxidation. It this a passive oxide layer...

    Flimsy Aluminum Turkey Fryer Pot

I'm hoping I accomplished that... I saw it first turn to a brass type of color then it started having a like a rainbow metalic type of effect. Then it just kinda looked like a darker aluminum color, but now it almost looks the same colro as when I started. If I didn't get the passive...

    Flimsy Aluminum Turkey Fryer Pot

Ok so I had the pot on the burner for about 2 hours and had a rolling boil for about 50 min. I turned off the water and immediately threw out the water. then with a clean towel wiped the inside down and put the top on. I'm leaving it outside under my patio. I have about half a tank of...

    Flimsy Aluminum Turkey Fryer Pot

SWEET!!! I scored a full propane tank for $15 so as I type I'm creating my passive oxide layer. I filled it to the top and it's been burning for about an hour ... still no rolling boil, but I do see little bubbles. So I'm thinking I need to have it on a rolling boil for 30 min? 60 min? Then...

    Flimsy Aluminum Turkey Fryer Pot

Sorry all my internet went down last night. I really REALLY appreciate all of you! Sure it's nice to have someone tell you the text book answer, but to talk to people who really know what the hell they are doing and actually have done it makes all the difference in the world!!!! Do I have to...

    Flimsy Aluminum Turkey Fryer Pot

I was stoked to buy this turkey fryer for $10! It came with a 7 gal?!? flimsy aluminum pot. I read the post of This vs. That and it said that you could use aluminum if you created a Passive oxide layer. I went to my LHBS and it was a different dude than last time and he was no help at all...

    Fermenter Suggestions

I was playing with this idea ... My wife has these canisters that she doesn't really use and if perhaps I were to take one of the lids and drill a hole for the airlock and put a brick on top for a better seal would that work ... I know there is the risk of my wife beating me with the rolling...

    Fermenter Suggestions

The opening is 4.5". I have a hardware store really close to my work I'll check there for lunch. Tin foil sound awesome! I can totally do a < 3 gallon batch. Might be better or my first run anyway. So foil = no airlock? I'm gonna do a search this this method. This is by far the most...
