If you want to go way north (UP) you should try KBC in Houghton Mi which has excellent beer. Theres also a couple of smaller brew pubs up that way. Red wood lodge in flint is also a must.
I've fermented in something similar and didn't notice any difference in taste. If you want to avoid the shipping they sell these at walmart in the camping section.
Hi, I was testing the mash and it was a little warm, but I was under the assumption that hotter water lowered pH. After everything was said and done my eff was down (65% ish) but the beer did taste great.
