    2nd Brew

10 months old, and it actually tasted better (but still horrendous) than when it was 8 weeks old. I'm not sure that was the reason, but it's the only thing I can think of. Thanks. Here's the recipe: Specialty Grains 1 lbs. Briess Caramel 20 Fermentables 6.3 lbs. Amber Malt...

    2nd Brew

It was horrible. Tasted like a sweet yet pungent cider... like rotted apple juice. I believe the bad tastes were caused by an excessively hot fermentation, but who knows. We'll see what happens in about 6 weeks or so. -I

    2nd Brew

Oh yeah... it's an American Amber Ale from Northern Brewer. Anyone ever make it?

    2nd Brew

After a disastrous first attempt, my 2nd batch is 12 minutes from being done with the boil. My yeast is activated, my fermenter is cleaned and sanitized, and we are ready to go. I think my mistake last time is that the fermenter was located in a closet with an ambient temp of 73-75 degrees. I...

    Activated Yeast Pack question

I had my yeast pack refrigerated, so I activated it late afternoon so I can brew in the AM. The package is inflating pretty quickly. Will it explode if I leave it over night? Should I put it back in the fridge? Thanks, -I

    Is 60 degrees too cold?

The open area of the basement read 69 degrees this morning. The pantry read 60. My last batch was kept in a closet reading 73-75. Beer tasted horrendous. What do you think?

    Is 60 degrees too cold?

I'm having the same issue. Spot number 1 turned out to be too hot. Ambient temp under the stairs in my basement was around 74 degrees. I didnt have a thermometer on my plastic fermenter, and it is my non-professional opinion that my first batch was undrinkable due to the fact that it was way...

    Marinade?

"Recent studies by German food chemist Udo Pollmer indicate that soaking red or white meats in beer, before grilling, reduces the formation of cancer-causing HCA’s (heterocyclic amines), and actually prevents the formation of these compounds. In his book Lexikon der Populären...

    Marinade?

LOL... I'm going to try it this weekend. I'll let you know.

    Marinade?

I wonder if I can use my bad batch of beer as a marinade? ANy thoughts?

    5-Gallon Deer Park Water Bottle

I just read about the 1" (25mm) Diamond Hole Saw. Cuts through glass, tile, ceramics, etc. I'm going to pick one up and give it a shot.

    5-Gallon Deer Park Water Bottle

I know - I'm bored. Besides, I didnt really enjoy the whole siphoning thing all that much the last time around. Looks like I'll siphon out of primary into the bottling bucket. I'd still like to drill the 1 inch hole into the glass octoganal shaped beverage dispenser, though. I think it...

Pretty similar to this, but much bigger: Glass Octagon Beverage Dispenser - 2 GAL, Drink Dispensers

    5-Gallon Deer Park Water Bottle

LOL. Forgot about that part! Maybe it's not such a good idea. Wow... that was a rough one. How would you go about drilling into glass? I also have this old 6+ gallon glass octoganal shaped beverage dispenser with a big open top. It has a hole drilled into it for a spigot. The hole is...
