    3-1/2 Month Old Malt?

I have some crushed malt that has been sitting around for 3-1/2 months after crushing. It has been at room temp. in a twisty-tied plastic bag. Would it still be ok to use? I also have some Czech Saaz hops that has been sitting in the fridge for the same period. What about that? Thanks...

Will aeration after primary hurt the beer?

If I strain through a grain bag when racking from primary to secondary, that will aerate the beer quite a bit. Would oxidation be a problem here? If not, when does oxidation become a problem? I would be doing this to a Belgian ale in the near future. Hucko

One year old malt still good?

I have 4 oz. of Munich malt (crushed) left over from a batch of Hefe-Weizen I brewed about a year ago. It has been sitting in a kitchen cabinet in a little plastic bag, closed with a twisty tie since then. Any opinions on whether it is ok to use? It doesn't look moldy or anything and still...

    Too Much Priming Sugar?

Hello All, I am currently at the primary stage of the Delirium Tremens extract recipe given at : https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f37/delirium-tremens-extract-77321/ I have two questions: 1.) It calls for 1/3 cup Belgian candi sugar in addition to the 1/2 cup corn sugar I normally use for...

How much DME to prime Hefe-Weizen?

sonetumliere85 -- I tried the tool you provided a link to and it recommended 11.5 oz. DME. How can I figure out how much my 3/4 cup of 60% wheat /40% barley DME weighed? That would be the one most useful piece of info. What's the dry density (not packed) of a typical DME? If I can get...

How much DME to prime Hefe-Weizen?

So maybe it's a 'blessing in disguise' that I didn't use quite as much as would normally be used for a weissbier, since I used your run-of-the-mill 22 oz. home brew bottles? We'll see how it turns out. One thing - today, one day after bottling, I was showing the one large clear one-quart...

How much DME to prime Hefe-Weizen?

So I've bottled my first serious attempt at brewing - a Weissbier. The day I bottled it I went to the local brew shop to buy 8 oz. of corn sugar to prime my 4-1/2 gallons of fermented brew. The guy there recommended 60% wheat / 40% barley Briess DME (which I also used in addition to 6 lbs...

    When to rack to secondary?

Thank you both. I know about three consecutive days with no change in hydrometer reading, but I figure it doesn't pay to even take the first reading until bubbling completely stops, is this right? And in this case, when that happens I imagine I would rack straight to the bottling bucket and...

    When to rack to secondary?

This is my first brew - a hefe-weizen - and I boiled it up Sunday before last. After the boil I stupidly poured the wort, trub, and all right into my primary fermenter. I now know I should have left as much of the trub as possible in the kettle, but didn't. So now it's been fermenting for...

    Secondary Fermenter for Hefe-Weizen?

How much corn sugar do you use for the prime? I'm actually shooting for something similar to the Hacker-Pschorr version of Hefe-Weizen, and I would like that level of carbonation. Hacker-Pschorr and Paulaner Hefe are almost the same in that respect, I know, but how much sugar would you...

    Secondary Fermenter for Hefe-Weizen?

I've started a batch of Paulaner-style Hefe-Weizen similar to the one on the recipes page. I pitched Sunday evening and after a slow start, much to my delight the fermentation has finally started taking off well after three days. My question is, when fermentation is complete, does it really...

    Bleach Solution Slipped Into Wort!!

OOOOH! I never thought of using alcohol in the air lock, although now it seems like such an obvious choice. What about Everclear? It seems to me that would be even cheaper per unit volume of alcohol and be even more pure than cheap vodka. Regarding the bleach solution slipping into the...

    Bleach Solution Slipped Into Wort!!

Hello All... This is my first post on the forum and I hope it's not too silly, but I had some of my bleach solution slip out of my airlock and into my wort. I use 2 tablespoons of plain Clorox bleach per gallon of water as a sanitizing solution which I also use in my airlock. What I did...
