    Root Beer Recipe

I am going to give root beer brewing a shot. I just ordered a pound each of sarsaparilla, birch bark, cinnamon sticks, spearmint, star anise, and orange peel. I also have vanilla extract, sucrose, local honey, and brown sugar and I'm trying to source some wintergreen leaves. I came up with a...

    Mosaic Hops

Hey guys, I have never brewed with Mosaic before, but I would really like to give it a shot. I can trade Chinook, Citra, Amarillo, Sorachi Ace, Magnum, Northern Brewer, Cascade, EKG, or Simcoe for some Mosaic. If anyone is interested, please send me a PM.

    Simple cider?

Yeah, my plan in case it is too dry is to back sweeten with a gallon more of apple juice, but I thought that all wine yeasts would take apple juice to the same final gravity... I assumed they would all ferment 100% of the sugar.

    Simple cider?

I just added Red Star Champagne yeast to 5 gallons of apple juice. I am expecting this to end up around 6% ABV. I am sure others of you have done this before. How did it turn out?

Never tried brewing a fruit beer

I have made up my mind that I want to brew a fruit beer when I get home. After doing some more reading, I think I am close to making up my mind. I want a lot of fruit flavor and I am not sure I have ever had a beer like what I am imaginig. Here is what I am thinking though... Fruit will be...

Force Carbonating Root Beer in Bottles

I am thinking of ordering Sprecher Root Beer Syrup. My plan is to mix the syrup in a bucket and fill two liter bottles, cool them down, and use a carbonater cap to apply 35-40 PSI while shaking the bottle until It looks carbonated. Could I then just let the bottles sit for a few hours to settle...

Skeeter Pee - Starting with Dry Yeast

I thought I would share my experience so far with skeeter pee fermentation. A few weeks ago I helped a friend make his first batch. After we were done boiling, I found out that he didn't have yeast energizer or a slurry or starter. We decided to roll with it and we stirred and let it sit for 24...

Apfelwein didn't come out too great

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Great-Value-Apple-100-Juice-Punch-Blend-96-oz/10415873 That is what I uses. I thought of what it tastes like... A watered down Riesling. It is still young,.. About 1.5 months, but I have had apfelwein this young that had more flavor than this. I am thinking of ways to...

Apfelwein didn't come out too great

I thought I would share with you guys the apfelwein that I just made that didn't come out all the great so that others can avoid doing what I did... I used a Great Value brand apple juice cocktail that tasted really good and I thought would make good apfelwein. It was mostly apple juice, but it...

    How would you SMaSH?

Thanks for the input Shinglejohn. It will be interesting to hear if anyone else chimes in. p.s- Your avatar looks like you really want to chop someone's head off.

    How would you SMaSH?

Thanks, I've actually seen that before... I guess a better way to describe what I said is say I have a lower alpha acid hop and I boil it for 20 minutes and I get incredible flavor. Is it possible that the amount of flavor I get from that hop addition would be greater than the flavor of a higher...

    How would you SMaSH?

This is something I have thought of... Pretend if there were International Flavor Units, similar to IBU's. Is it possible that one hop with 20% AA could contribute 100 IBU's and 30 theoretical IFU's and a hop that contains 10% AA could contribute 50 IBU's and still give 30 IFU's using the same...

    How would you SMaSH?

I just posted this on the beeradvocate forum, but I was curious to see if there are going to be different schools of thoughts between the two forums. There is no right answer to this question, I just want to see what you guys would do, before I decide how I am going to do my experiment... I...

    Montrachet yeast for Skeeter Pee?

After seeing the skeeter pee thread and realizing how inexpensive it is to make, I figured I should give it a shot. I have read some discussion on which yeast to use. I already have an apfelwein (made with Great Value apple juice cocktail) fermenting and I was considering using that yeast slurry...
