I've got a 1500w ULWD element mounted in my 8 gallon boil kettle that I use to supplement my gas stove. Works like a charm, I keep the element full on and throttle the stove back to medium or medium/low to maintain a boil.
Yeah, I guess using batteries and inverters would probably be pretty expensive...looking at some of the deep cycle batteries and one of them would about blow a $500 budget. The solar oven/giant magnifying glasses are great, but I don't think our sun angle and or lack of sunlight in the winter...

For the most part it went well...only one major mishap in which I spilled about a cup while sparging when I forgot to close the valve on my brew kettle...
