keeping the heat in the mash tun

I've only ever once had to do anything else and that was because I was brewing in 8 degree weather. On that day I literally pulled a Carhart jacket over the top of my mashtun. (Brewing in the garage) Even then it was probably overkill. Over the course of the 60 minute mash I recall only losing 1...

    Keezer Help

Maybe even some 3/4 inch plywood for the inner liner with some foam board insulation.

    Cigar Box Stir Plate

You definetly don't want to increase the gap between your stir bar and the magnet. You'll reduce the magnetic hold on the stirbar and it will be MORE prone to flying off. With ours the magnet is nearly flush with the plexiglass top. Also, take extra, extra care to be certain that magnet is...

    Keezer Help

I seem to remember from my old deck building adventures that they sold a "wrapper" of 1/8 to 1/4 inch wood you could put around the outside of your original box to give it a cleaner look. It could also save a little money. Finally, I'm not sure how easy or hard it would be to put your faucet...

    Cigar Box Stir Plate

Here's one I built with a friend. Used a cohiba box, a PC fan, a hard drive magnet, some LEDs and a radioshack voltage regulating plug. Oh yeah, we pimped it out with those LEDs and a plexiglass top. All in all though I think it actually cost us about $25 to make. $19 of which was the Radioshack...

OK, got together Red Ale recipe. Mash temp + Check please!

That would work! Depending on the overall flavor and mouthfeel you're going for, if you wanted to have a slightly sweeter, less dry finish that accented the malts, you could go at a higher temperature, say 154-155 for 60 minutes. It really depends on what you want the beer to be...

    Best AG Brewing Podcast?

So I was surfing around iTunes today and it occured to me to check for some brewing informational podcasts. There are a fair number of them. I just wanted to poll the group and get an idea of a good one(s) to subsribe to that go into pretty decent technical detail on AG brewing, recipe design...

    Happy Repeal Day!

December 5th is the anniversary of the day the United States repealed the 18th Amendment, ending prohibition, and giving us all the constitutional right to consume alcohol. This year is the 75th anniversary. To date this is not yet an official holiday. But, awareness/adoption could one day help...

    carbonation suggestions for kegging?

Standard beerline will drop pressure at roughly 2psi per foot. I've seen higher numbers posted, and like you I actually tried using them, but settled in on the numbers posted above.

    carbonation suggestions for kegging?

\ I'd say you're a bit warm. You're getting good head at pour due to the pressure, but then your beer is gassing out quickly because it cannot keep the CO2 in the beer very well at that temperature. I balance out pretty well at about 10psi at 38 degrees with 5ft of standard beer line.

    carbonation suggestions for kegging?

What is the temperature of your kegerator/keezer? Carbonation is the result of two factors, pressure and temperature. You might be too warm... Or, you may have a bad poppet or lid causing a slight leak.

    "Imperializing" a stout recipe

interesting. Another option you can consider, in addition to upping your base malt and specialty grains, is to choose a yeast strain which closely matches the flavor profile you want, but is more attenuative. That way you maximize the conversion of all those delicious grains to alcohol.
