How many pounds of spent grain do you produce every year? How do you dispose of it?

How do you cool the grains? I have access to a couple cows in my vicinity. And would love to dump the spent grains over the fence, but as it's 160F+/- isn't that harmful? Shouldn't I wait for them to cool down? The cow caretaker has been hesitant on receiving the grain, so I want to do...

    Maine breweries to visit

Good timing - I just moved back to the Portland area. Portland has quite a few; Shipyard is right in downtown. There are quite a few good pubs near there and one could easily spend all night in the Old Port stumbling about. Plenty of smaller Micropubs. Also in Portland is Allagash (a very QUICK...

    Creating a great Scottish Ale

I've brewed a couple Scottish ales. The key is that Scottish yeast (from either White Labs or Wyeast). Not sure what flavors you are looking for. I like a little peat smoked malt in mine. Sure it's not "traditional" (whatever that means), but I brew what I like. You should do the same. Keep...

Sweetwater and 21st Amendment coming to Chiacago

Sweetwater (IIRC) is the largest craft brewer in Georgia. Or it might be Terrapin... Either way, it's great news! They have some really good stuff. Their 420 Extra Pale Ale is great. They also have a brown (Georgia Brown) that is one of the best Brown Ales I've tried. All of their stuff is easy...

    Paint mixer as brewing equipment

Thanks for the advice. I brewed yesterday and used my paint mixer during the chill process. I did notice a slight decrease in my chilling process. Or rather it seemed like less time. I used it on the lowest setting so that I was just getting a gentle stir. Kept the splashing to a minimum...

    Paint mixer as brewing equipment

OOOoh. I like the paint mixer as a way to chill the wort faster. I just used a sanitized spoon to stir it. Now my drill will get even more use as a brewing tool!!

    Paint mixer as brewing equipment

I use that sort of thing to aerate my wort as well. I initially used it when I had made a batch of wine and didn't even think to add it as part of my brewing day. Ever since using it to aerate, my beer has come out that much better. Don't forget to keep some towels handy. I have gotten a...

New post a picture of your pint

Okay this picture freaks me out. It looks like the beer is floating. I can't get my mind to not see it that way.

    Hobit's beer style

Having just finished reading the LOTR books, I'd have to say that more the English style ales. Browns, Porters, Bitters, etc. There was a small part towards the end talking about a certain grain that grew exceptionally well to make good ale. But that's about all it goes into. They smoked...

Anyone else out there hate starsan?

I have always used Iodophor. Never had a problem. Running low on the big bottle and was seriously considering switching (to try something new). After reading all this, I think I'll stick with what works for me and get another big bottle. On a side note, I ran into a fellow home brewer that is...

Year-Round Styles? Help Me Pick 4 to Perfect

I've thought about taking this approach to my brewing several times. It's pretty solid. What I would do in your situation: Nitro - Pub Ale (something like Boddingtons/Ordinary Bitter) British - Dark Mild Ale for sure German - Wheat beer. American - Amber or Pale Ale Reason: Nitro- avoid the...
