    Experimenting with hop flavors

I've been brewing for a few years now, but because the SWMBO isn't a hop fan haven't gotten a chance to brew many IPAs. She's focused on watching what she drinks over the summer, so I saw this as the ideal time to brew something that won't tempt her to cheat and have a beer. Because I'm a great...

Extract Ale Recipe Ideas for May in Florida?

I'm working on a recipe for a nice, refreshing witbier to brew up for the summer right now. My wife likes the style as she's not a big hop fan, and I think all of our friends will appreciate something cool and refreshing to drink during the unbearable FL summer. Most of the recipes seem pretty...

    Witbier with Rye

Thanks for the insight! I was worried about the amount of Rye as everything I saw online was a suggestion for how much to use in other, maltier/heavier styles.

    Witbier with Rye

First time brewing with rye so i thought i'd hit up the experts at HomeBrewTalk for a critique of this recipe: Witbier with Rye 5 gallon all grain brew OG: 1.051 SG FG: 1.015 SG IBUs: 13.9 Color: 3.7 SRM 3.5lbs - white wheat malt (2.4 SRM) 3.5 lbs - Bel 2-row pilsner malt (2.0 SRM) 12 oz -...

A little rusty on recipes - Amber Ale critique?

I think I read making a starter was a 'best practices' type of deal when I was first starting out and have always done it since. Creates more yeast babies that are ready to go & hungry when you pour it into the wort, leading to a better overall fermentation.

A little rusty on recipes - Amber Ale critique?

I'm a bit rusty at this so I thought I'd reach out for some input. Use to be an avid homebrewer (4-5 brews a year) until about a year and a half ago when my wife & I moved to FL and I quickly realized there was no dark, cool basement to store my fermentation bucket in! We finally have our own...

Need some info or advice about moving to Florida

Sorry to hi-jack the thread, but this seemed like an eerily appropriate place to follow up with similar questions to Bigbeavk! My fiancée and I also live in Maryland but she is interviewing for a position in the St Petersburg/Tampa area this week, so I too wanted to get an idea of how Central...

What are some of the mistakes you made...where your beer still turned out great!

I've got a fresh, new story for the thread! Still in the process of boiling my first all-grain brew (A SMaSH MO & Challenger Ale). Came time to vorlauf and nothing was coming out because the tubing connecting the false bottom to the spigot in my mash tun had fallen off and was mixed into the...

    First SMaSH and All-Grain Recipe

Thanks Malty! Fantastic game on Saturday! Here's hoping for a win this week too, but even a win now isn't as good as a playoff win against the Steelers ;)

    First SMaSH and All-Grain Recipe

I think a few things led to me going for a SMASH - 1) It's pretty simplistic and thus seemed like an ideal way to ease into all grain brewing. 2) Baltimore Beer Week was back in October and my LHBS had 2 special events - a yeast tasting & a hops tasting to see how they influence different...

Raise Your Hand If Your Wife Or Husband Is Responsible For Getting You Into Brewing

Girlfriend got me a starter brewing kit for our first Valentines Day together. Needless to say, she now has a shiny ring on her hand & all the beer she can drink.

    First SMaSH and All-Grain Recipe

I've slowly been building the equipment to switch over to all grain brewing and now thanks to Christmas, I'm all set to brew up my first all grain batch! I've been interested in trying an ESB recipe for awhile now, and am fascinated by the idea of SMaSH beers to help me better understand...

    1st AG - ESB

Thanks for the input! I think my biggest fear is getting the calculations wrong on beersmith, but from everything I've read it seems the only way to get those right is to do a few batches & confirm my numbers. I did cut back on the victory, upped the amount of maris otter, added some...

    1st AG - ESB

I've been extract brewing for a year or so and decided to treat myself for my birthday to not only BeerSmith 2.0 but also an AG set up with a 10 gallon igloo cooler and a 7.5 gal kettle to handle 5 gal boils. Decided that my first attempt would be a nice, malty, drinkable ESB. However, I've...
