hey dav8dav, fancy meeting you here. The hydrometer is almost at 1.000 I'm going to give it till next sunday, as the airlock is still bubbling about every 35 seconds. We'll see

    When to bottle a Cider?

thanks for the good tips. I see what you mean about the hydrometer. I just dropped it in the liquid and it sank to the bottom, did'nt float at all. The recipe was 5 gallons apple cider (w/o preservatives) and yeast.

    When to bottle a Cider?

"you can cold crash it, or you can sorbate and bisulphite it..and call it good." I"m not familiar with these tactics. It's not clear clear, but there is a big separation from the liquid and the stuff that fell out of solution, dead yeast, etc. problem is, I want it to be christmas presents...

    When to bottle a Cider?

My cider has been in the primary for over 3 weeks. It is still actively bubbling and the airlock pops about once every 30 seconds (down from once every 20 seconds a few days ago). My specific gravity reading is nearing 1.000. It's gotta be around 1.004 right now. Fermentation still seems...

Easiest way to get a good cider?

thank you all for the tips. I"m going to get started this weekend and hope for the best. I tend to stay away from specific gravity readings when I do my beers and just stick with about 9 days in the primary. It has never done me wrong. I worry about the risk of contamination by taking all...

Easiest way to get a good cider?

I've decided to try a cider for my christmas gift brew this year, but have had some confusion when reading the posted recipes. I guess my questions would be: 1. What's the easiest recipe? 2. Should I boil or not boil the apple cider I use? 3. Can I use cloudy cider, or should I use...

    Cranberry Lager for Thanksgiving?

thanks for the info! I've never done a lager before, so was hoping to try my first. I wasn't aware of the extra time requirements. Perhaps a CranAle?

    Cranberry Lager for Thanksgiving?

I came up with this idea the other day. Anyone tried such a thing? Obvious concerns are that real cranberrys are extremely tart. My store sells some concentrated syrups, but I'd imagine those might not be great. thoughts?

    How long for Aroma Hops?

I'm working on a Christmas Ale and the recipe called for Saaz aroma hops, however, it didn't say for how long to leave them in. It did state to put them in after the boil was all done with, which I did. I'd say I left them in for about 5 minutes. Is that too long, too short? do aroma hops...

coffee again. do i really need a 2ndary?

I've been researching adding coffee ad nauseum and haven't found any definitive strategies. I'm thinking of just adding some brewed coffee to my bottling bucket, as I don't use a 2ndary fermenter. Does anyone know if that will fail? I've heard suggestions to steep the grounds in cool water...
