Forgive my inexperience but when people say they added dextrose to a recipe I assume they mean the kind made from corn, not wheat. Corn sugar seems to get a bad rap so is that the reason for saying "I added 1lb of dextrose" instead of 1lb of corn sugar? Or is wheat dextrose a better alternative?

I don't see Muntons hopped DME anywhere except on their website. I inquired about its availability through retail stores but haven't heard back.

I see I have a lot to learn. I'm assumed that when you said hopped extract you meant hopped dry extract which I didn't know existed. So I searched for it and found Muntons Spraymalt Hopped Light. This is from Muntons: "A spray dried barley malt extract powder with added hops to introduce a sweet...

Yes, I didn’t get that about the DME but it turns out to be a good thing. I found out I shouldn't be boiling my pre-hopped LME because it can screw up the Isomerised hops. I love this site, I'm learning a lot of things I didn’t know and can't wait to brew another batch using some of the...

Just found the answer, thanks for suggesting I do some research. This is what I found which everyone here probably already knows. "When you boil your can of hopped malt extract you run the risk of over-isomerizing the hops. What this can do is lead to an extremely bitter beer and also create a...

Got it, thanks. I was thinking that just boiling/simmering the 1lb of light DMV and 1lb light honey in a gallon of water would be a better process for my recipe.

Thanks, I'll try that. But your comment on what heating at 180F for 20 minutes will achieve was blurred.

I'm using Pre-Hopped Coopers LME, that's why I asked. I'm not trying to hijack the thread into a debate about whether to boil or not. I just don't have a lot of experience and thought the OP could shed some light. I'm also very careful to thoroughly stir the wert during the process so I don't...

I live in the suburbs of Chicago and there are 2 suppliers within a half hour of me but I'm not sure what brands of LME they carry. I only know they don't carry Coopers and can't get it. After this batch is done I'd like to try one of your suggestions. Can you briefly explain your process using LME?

Well look here what I stumbled on, a LME brewing thread. This is really timely for me. I’m a VERY casual brewer, 27 batches since 1980, the last one was about 10 years ago. Mostly LME mixed with a few DME’s but never did a real all grain brew. The last and best brew I made was with Coopers...

Read those posts and apparently I'm a little slow to learn the difference between DME and LME. 🙄 Since my interest in home brewing has perked up again I'll have to try brewing some recipes with DME. Actually I did try that about 35 years ago when I made a batch of Rocky Raccoons Crystal Honey...
