    efficiency on a recipe

should i care about efficiency if i can hit my gravity numbers?

Pro/Cons of starting with a 1 gallon kit

i've been brewing for just over a year doing all 1 gallon BIAB. since my yields are so low, it encourages me to brew more often and i feel like my learning curve has increased pretty quickly as a result. i've brewed around 25 batches so far and have had the ability to try out many different...

    accurate mash tmperature reading

I do BIAB, but this can be applied to anyone mashing...what's the "correct" way to take a temperature reading? I've found that temps vary on where in the kettle my thermometer is. I read that a lot of people using thermapens but that only has a 4.5 inch probe, so is that deep enough?

    efficiency on a recipe

the calculator i've been using is http://www.brewersfriend.com/brewhouse-efficiency/ which says that brew house is what goes in to the fermentor this is all very helpful and i had no idea there were different interpretations. moving forward, i'll be using boil kettle volume. thanks!

    efficiency on a recipe

on the calculator, it asks to enter the "amount of wort collected". does that mean how much went in to the fermentor, or is that the total volume of what's left after mashing (including trub)?

    efficiency on a recipe

when they don't specify, should i assume it's mash efficiency or brewhouse efficiency? side question: is it ok to measure gravity for efficiency at hot wort temps of 170 or should i let it cool to room temps? i know you can use a temperature calculator to adjust, but at 170 degrees, i'm not...

Autumn Seasonal Beer Imperial Pumpkin Pie Ale

tons of sugar in this, it blew my airlock off. hope the few hours it spent fermenting in the open will be ok!!

Autumn Seasonal Beer Imperial Pumpkin Pie Ale

One more thing I'd like to get clarification on, the recipe says 75 minutes of boiling at the top, but doesn't list anything into the boil until 60 minutes. Why boil for 15 minutes with nothing added? Boiling Time (Minutes): 75 2.00 oz Magnum [13.10%] (60 min) Hops 36.2 IBU

Autumn Seasonal Beer Imperial Pumpkin Pie Ale

"At bottling - 1.25 tsp of Pumpkin Pie spice was added per 5 gallons as well as ~4 oz of real vanilla extract" confused by this wording; i know this is a 10gal recipe...so 8oz of vanilla total? or is the 4oz for the whole 10 gal?
