    Adding sugar to the fermenter

Thanks for the response. I did extend the boil by 45 minutes, but I was up against some time restraints, so I couldn't extend the boil as long as I would have. Not to mention I'm fine with being able to have a little extra beer, and being able to experiment with part of the batch. Thanks...

    Adding sugar to the fermenter

I brewed up a winter ale two weeks ago and overshot the wort volume a bit. I ended up with about 6.5 gallons after the boil when I was shooting for 5.5. So my OG was hurt a little, but it still came in at 1.058 which is fine by me. Anyway, I had a pack of dry yeast laying around that I...

    Identifying Hop Varieties

I just got about 4 lbs of hops off of craigslists from a guy who went down to Oregon from Seattle to pick hops. He said that he didn't know what the varieties were, but he knew there were two different kinds. So is there anyway to tell what kind of hops they? If not what is the best way to...

    Shipping Beer

I have two questions. First, I want to send some freinds beer for the holidays, but I've never shipped beer. What do people recomment as the best way so the bottles stay safe and don't break? Second, I'm flying to the in-laws for the holidays and want to bring some of my beer with me for my...

    Caramel 60L malt question

Thanks Cheese that was a very helpful and interesting reading. It was way more than what I was looking for... the yes or no answer, but I'm also way happier having gotten all that info. By the way I'm about to brew your Vanilla Caramel Creme Ale as my second AG. Wish me luck, hopefully I...

    Caramel 60L malt question

So I went into my LHBS yesterday to pick up some supplies for my next batch, but they didn't have any Caramel 60L malt... in fact they didn't have any Caramel malts just Crystal, which said aka Caramel next to it. So my question is are Caramel and Crystal the same thing? If so why do programs...

85% PM efficancy - no good?

I added boiling. I had 6.75lbs of grain with 1.25 quarts per lb for the mash. I held the mash at 155*. Then I added 1.5 quarts boiling for mash out.

85% PM efficancy - no good?

I did a few things differently. One is that I mashed out for the last 10 min of a 60 min mash. Also, instead of doing a two batch sparges I only did one and I let it sit for 10 mins before collecting the wort. Before I did two batches with only letting it sit for 5 mins each before...

85% PM efficancy - no good?

I'll probably get some brewing software one of these days, but I'm a very math oriented type of guy so I like to be able to do the calculations myself. Thanks Bike N Brew for coming through again with the calculations.

85% PM efficancy - no good?

So last time I brewed I got about a 60% efficancy, so this time I decided to overcompensate. I added a little bit extra grain to the bill. After brewing it looks like I got an 85% efficancy. I'm pysched, but with my over compensation of grain and increased efficancy my OG is a lot higher than...

    Estimating pre-boil measurements

Thanks for all of the replys, it really helps. Bike N Brew thanks for the calculations. That was exactly what I was looking for. Can't wait to try out a mini AG batch. Now I just have to figure out what to brew.

    Estimating pre-boil measurements

I was wondering if there were ways to calculate pre-boil wort volume after you have mashed and sparged depending on how much grain you use. I am asking because I only have room for 3 gallons in my brew pot and wanted to do a small AG test run of about 2.5 gallons to see if I want to go down...
