    Passed BJCP Exam

Took the exam last night and passed. I had the style guideline open and was able to lookup stuff I was unsure of. It wasn't terribly hard if you've read the guidelines through a couple times. If you're thinking about giving it a shot, I say go for it.

Speaking of updates - I do have one. I believe I posted my recipe previously, but if I didn't, I will update again soon. Bottled my beer last week. It was 18%, and I dry hopped for 3 weeks with simcoe, amarillo and citra. Off the top of my head, I BELIEVE it was ~2oz each (whole hops). I...

Yeah, the online exam is just a gateway pass/fail for the tasting exam, the score there will determine rank.

    Passed BJCP Exam

Oh wow that is good to know. I might just have to give it a test run for $10 and see if I can handle it in one go. I know they don't tell you your score, but how did you feel about the 160 that you did answer? Even if you assume you got 90% of your 160 correct, that's 144/200 = 72% . So you...

    Passed BJCP Exam

That is not actually quite accurate. The score needed to pass is not published, and therefore could be higher or lower than 60%. I emailed the test director himself, and he said that the lack of a published passing score was done intentionally. Perhaps they plan on changing it over time, or...

    Speidel Braumeister (brewmaster)

Do not order a voltage converter. It is generally a bad idea for this device ( a large heating element) See my previous post.

Just wanted to post a quick update about my batch. I did the second of 5 planned stages of dryhopping yesterday. Added 0.9oz each Simcoe and Amarillo and 1.3 oz Citra. All my hops have been whole leaf, which has made dealing with this beer a bit of a pain. My brewing kettle got clogged so...

I started with 6oz 2x a day , then immediately bumped up to 12oz, and by the third day I was adding 24oz morning and night. If your gravity is dropping fast, add that sugar! I didn't have any problem with giving the 099 plenty of sugar.

Haven't posted here in awhile but I just wanted to add my own update. Here is the recipe I used All the hops except for bittering were whole leaf, and I made the mistake of not using a hop bag! It clogged all my tubes and such, so I had to scoop it out from my brew kettle using a mug and a...

I'm slightly confused with the calculation. Seeing as how I'm brewing this on Sunday, I need to get this right. Correct me where I go wrong. I thought the calculation was : (dextrosePPG * lbDextrose) / volume = total gp added. For dextrose monohydrate, the ppg = 37. Assuming you have a 5...

I have a fermenator so the dump valve is going to come in very handy. Do you think it would be beneficial to dump the trub from the inital fermentation of wlp007, or leave that cake there after pitching wlp099 starter? I'm thinking it probably wouldn't hurt to leave it.

    This is what I will be doing then. 90-60 min 6oz warrior 20-0 min 2oz each Amarillo/Simcoe/Citra (0.2oz * 10 additions)) @ 0 = 1.5simcoe 1.5 amarillo 5.5 citra (4oz extra over your recipe) Dry - 2 weeks total : 0.9oz * 5 additions of simcoe & Amarillo = 4.5 oz each (simcoe/amarillo)...

I will certainly be brewing something else after this with the citra, but with 11oz left, I think adding an exta 3-4 oz citra @ 0min will be good, and still leave me with PLENTY for later (perhaps for a SMASH recipe??) The only other modification I was considering making to your recipe was...
