I had considered doing something like this - probably with a US hop like citra/mosaic/I7 to help reduce the chances for hop burn that I've noticed can come with the AUS/NZ hops when added during the ferment. Interesting to see that some are recommending it as a standard practice to prevent hop...
I saw a similar drop in my last NEIPA with LA3 and a post-fermentation dry hop. I didn't get quite the hop character I was looking for in my previous NEIPA with a cold post-ferm dry hop at 50F, so on this one, I did a soft crash to 50F after fermentation, but let the beer warm up to 68F for the...
Has anyone here who'd made the switch from fermenting 5 gallons in buckets or similarly wide vessels to fermenting in 5g corny kegs noticed any impact on the typical attenuation due to the switch? I've recently had a couple of beers (using WY1968, so a very flocculent strain) stall out around...
I don't really have any insight to add here, but those are some interesting observations, and I'm curious what some of the "experts" here think about this. I might try just adding some potassium bicarbonate to some finished NEIPA this week and taking pre & post pH measurements to see what kind...
@Brooothru Does the LoDO accessory for the Braumeister impose any limitations on the min or max grain bill and/or batch size possible? What is the max OG you expect you could achieve with your setup without using DME or other work arounds? Could you reduce the batch size to obtain a higher OG...
Going back to the late oats addition from the IG story - do we know whether they're being added after some sort of higher temp mash out step? Given how opaque some of the high oat content OH beers can be, I don't think it would be out of the realm of possibility for the late addition to be...
I have the same Milwaukee refractometer as the OP, and while I've only used it for 2 batches so far, I have noticed similar difficulty in getting a stable reading when the sample has been cloudy. I think I'll try running it through my aeropress with a paper filter the next time and hopefully...
Given that many here are now adding all dry hops after a soft crash and lower temps (around 60F or so), has anyone run into issues with shipping those beers or entering them in competition? I'm guessing hop creep could cause issues if the beer is allowed to warm up to room temperature, which...
This is my experience with this yeast as well. The 3 NEIPAs I've made with WLP095 have all turned out great, but they do have a tendency to clear after 1-2 months in the keg, whereas LA3 won't ever clear (at least as far as I can tell).
I've been enjoying this thread and have even learned a few new things, which I wasn't necessarily expecting having switched to a simple propane BIAB setup (no recirc) about 5 years ago after starting with Denny's batch sparge method. Over the past 1-2 years, I've been looking at upgrading to...
One other consideration/suggestion that I'd have (if the flow control feature is important to you) would be to think about swapping those intertap flow control faucets for perlicks. I bought one of each to try when I decided to move to flow control faucets, and the flow control feature on the...
I have one CBDS and have experienced some flavor carrying over from the hops in IPAs to more mild flavored beers. I suspect it affects mainly only the ounce or two of beer that is sitting for some time in the tubing (not sure how long it takes for this to happen), but it was noticeable enough to...
That's good to know - so in your fermenter you're using the add-on stainless screen that CBDS sells? And have you tried this with an IPA with a good amount of dry hops (after cold crash)? Or do you not dry-hop in the primary? Do you typically do a closed transfer using gravity, or do you push...
Not sure if you're already aware of this or have tried it before, but you can certainly use gravity to do a closed transfer to siphon the beer from fermenting keg to serving keg. You just need to position the fermenter above the serving keg and create a pressure differential (~5psi should be...
I see that the Nukatap FC faucets are due out later this year. I may give one of those a try to see how it compares to my Perlicks, but the Intertap FC I bought to try out was basically useless in terms of actually being able to control flow. Unlike the Perlicks, dialing back the flow with the...
