Thanks for the help guys. Knew the grate was the culprit, going to try and find an alternative as djfriesen suggested. Going to get scraping away at the rust today.
Haven't yet, that was my first thought but wanted to check here first to make sure that wouldn't cause anymore damage as far as wearing away at the bottom of the kettle. I've read lots of different tips from using aluminum foil to onion to some kind of toothpaste based cleaner. Just not sure...
So a few weeks ago I was heating my water up to mash temp in my 10 gallon aluminum kettle, when a bit of a family emergency came up. I left the water in the kettle with a metal grate at the bottom I use to keep my grain bag from scorching (brew in a bag), thinking I would come back to it later...
As the person who drank the beer in that picture, I can affirm that this is one damn tastey beer. Had it side by side with the FBS and wouldn't change a thing. Thanks Mike!
4 weeks should be perfect for the primary and another 2-3 in the bottle should make them drinkable. I followed a similar method for a pumpkin brew and found that the tastes really started to come around after about 2 months in the bottle, so don't drink through them too quickly!
I wouldn't...
I wouldn't worry. I actually just bottled mine two days ago and when I took a sample it tasted pretty good. I ended up using amylase enzyme to cut down the longer sugars from the dextrins into shorter ones that would ferment. Did that after it sat in the carboy for about 2 or 3 weeks and it...
Definitely not looking for something sweet. Carafoam is for mouthfeel and head retention only, so if 4oz will do the trick for that, sounds perfect. 8oz of the Crystal 40 sounds good too. First time putting together a grain bill like this so I was really just guessing. I prefer IPAs a bit...
About to brew my first all grain batch this weekend with the brew in a bag method. Looking for some criticisim on the recipe I threwtogether. Wanted a lighter grain bill for my first BIAB and I love nice, citrusy, juicy IPAs. Any and all feedback welcome!

Do it and put two away for a while. This beer is MUCH better with 3 years on it (not that it's bad fresh though). Know how tough it can be to wait that long though!
Did you steal said glass? Could be some sort of self-destruction defense mechanism. Might not have happened if you poored a CBC beer into it.
This thread is really making me want some Cerise Cassee right about now...
I did it by hand and came up with about the same. Resulted in 7.3% ABV (off by .1 from the calculator above, could just be rounding?). Just for fun, let me know if I'm missing something here:
5gal=640 ounces. 640(.067)=42.88 alc oz.
10oz(.045)= 4.5 alc oz.
42.88+4.5=47.38
new volume...
