    Hydrometer help

Good points. It's actually about 12 inches of sewing thread held on by a piece of tape. A friend loaned it to me who's brewed with it for years. Also it took a good reading last week, so I don't think that's the problem.

Dropped in tap water and it did the same, dropped well below 1.000. Actually below 990.

    Hydrometer help

Thanks for the replies. It must be broken. Probably dropped it or my kids got hold of it. Anyway the beer looks and tastes great. AHS Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout clone kit.

    Hydrometer help

OG was +/- 1.05 a week ago. I made a yeast starter and it cooked vigorously for 4 days then slowly for 3 more. The beer tastes great.

    Hydrometer help

First time using a hydrometer I hit OG right after brewing. After 7 days of vigorous fermentation that slowly tapered off I racked to secondary as per the instructions. Once in secondary I took another reading but got 0. The hydrometer literally sunk up to the tape that holds the string on the...

    just ordered 2 kits...

I brewed the NB Irish red ale in December. It has a decent flavor but I put too little priming sugar in and it's a little flat. It was my first time brewing and I'm guessing I screwed up on a few points. My advice would be to make sure you're hitting the right temperatures during grain steeping...

    Is secondary fermenter necessary?

I'm on the UT border, actually Vegas is closer than Flag. Probably some good stores there.

    Is secondary fermenter necessary?

I brewed my first extract kit of Irish red ale the day after Xmas. Being a total novice I failed to buy a hydrometer or even think about readings. The kit instructions said to primary for 1-2 weeks and secondary for 2-4 weeks then bottle for 4 weeks. I primaried for 10 days, about a week after...

    Hello from AZ desert

Hi. I'm new to home brewing. Just got a dual glass carboy kit from Northern Brewer for Xmas. Tried the Irish red ale now I'm looking for. Kolsch kit online. The closest homebrew store is in Flagstaff but that's a 4 hr drive. Anybody made a really great Kolsch at home?

    Cold conditioning outside

This is probably a no brainer but I'm a rookie home brewer. For my second brew I want to try a Kolsch extract kit . My wife's favorite beer is the Uinta Hoodoo Kolsch. I've been reading a lot of Kolsch recipes and they usually require keeping the fermentor around 50 degrees for several weeks . I...
