The brewbuilt uses standard size triclamps which is nice. The brewbuilt conicals are very nice. The mini uni is nice in that it can cool a wider range of volumes, like 5 and 10 gallons. Often a half size ferment does not rise to the jacketed area to get cooled.
It also helps to recirculate for a couple of minutes before turning on the element. It gets the flour in the mash and not on the element. I figured this out the hard way.
Control fermentation Temps, even a glass carboy in a fridge, will be huge. Then o2 free transfers. After that it is controlling mash temps. That can be fine with just a cooler like you have now. Or, I cheap 120 volt rims system.
