I generally break my 5 gallons up into 1 gallon batches for flavoring (as we are still trying out which flavors we like) i use half a packet per gallon and it comes out nice and clear. a whole pack makes for a very cloudy after product.
don't think your going to get an accurate OG with those sticks as it's only getting the sugar from the outter layer and those things are PURE spun sugar. this might end up higher than what your expecting
i love how 1118 handles "sweet" meads. i've never had one turn out "to sweet" but there again i haven't really pushed that particular strain.

i've got a batch of the nestle aging as we speak. it's on about month 7 right now. i'm going all the way to 12 months before i try it again. i tried it at 4 months, it was alright. we'll see what a year does to it.
