    Chalk Taste

Thanks BA, that Primer is great stuff. Maybe it’s the New Years Fog, but I still don’t understand what he is saying needs to be done for RO water and brewing an IPA. He mentions a baseline, some other measurements and then talks about doubling. ——————————————————— Baseline: Add 1 tsp of...

    Chalk Taste

Thanks for all the replies. I have been doing a lot of searching on here and I think it's a water problem. Not just because of the chalkinessbut now only after a few more days, the hoppiness and "fresh" flavor is gone. The beer is good overall but almost seems old. I downloaded Bru'n Water but...

    Chalk Taste

My recent BIAB recipe of Northern Brewers Fresh Squished IPA turned out terrific... for the most part. After only 2 weeks fermenting and one week in the keg, it tasted wonderful, even though it was young. Now, after another week in the keg, it has a slight chalk after flavor. The kit called to...

    Efficiency

Soo.. If I take a reading pre-boil, that gives me the efficiency of sugar extraction. Post boil reading gives me OG, correct? I have John Palmers How To Brew Book but it is lacking in some areas.. Thanks for the great responses so far!

    Efficiency

I’ve brewed 5-6 BIAB batches I’m I’m comfortable with the process but I’m having a hard time grasping the efficiency concept. If I’m buying pre-made recipe kit, do I even need to know my setup efficiency? Or do I need to know that to help me hit the correct OG? Confused..

Advice on IPA grain to glass timing

Not sure what the correct answer is but it does seem to be the shorter time the better. To a point of course..but that was your question. I have an IPA going now and I'm doing two things differently. Kegging on day 16 and transferring from fermenter to keg with CO2 to keep it away from oxygen...

    A Gallon Short

I haven't been brewing very long but when I first started I read a million things on calculating effeincey and just confused myself, so I gave up on trying to calculate it. I have missed my recipe OG target the last brew or two so this time I milled the grain much finer than before, hoping...

    A Gallon Short

Thanks for the responses but now I have gone from not being concerned to being concerned. My first thoughts were - no big deal. Then I went to - meh, just need to add hops to overcome the stronger malt flavor. Then when beermanpete said I would have missed my OG anyway - I became concerned...

    A Gallon Short

Oh, I did leave out that info. My target OG was 1.70, but I overshot that and hit 1.80.

    A Gallon Short

I done messed up. :) Brewed a 5gl IPA BIAB recipe last weekend and realized after I pitched the yeast that I had missed my water calculations and only had 4 gallons in the fermenter... What can I expect from the finished product? A “stronger” tasting beer with a higher than expected IBU and...
