    10 gal APA needs critique

Fair enough! I've got ounces of Nugget... I was thinking to add more bittering charge anyway. This calculator shorts me on IBUs for flameout additions tho. But I kind of like how a hopbursted ale fades to malty over a time. Yeah I'll prob throw in an extra 1/2 oz of nugget at 60min

forgot the crystal in a RIS

During the boil yesterday I realized that I forgot to add Special B and cara120 (1.5lb total) to the grain bill. Should I run out to the homebrew store, buy the grain, come home and steep it, bring to a boil and cool and add to the actively-fermenting primary? Or just live and let live...

add sugar in boil or during fermentation?

haio, Adding sugar to the boil inverts the sucrose (b/c low pH), but sugar additions early in fermentation help the yeast focus on maltose before crapping out on the simple sugars. ----- I'm making a russian stout (5 gal) with 20lbs of 2-row and at least 1 lb of brown sugar, pitched onto the...

    roeselare grain bill

Thx for the reply! 1) TBH i lied- the lb is a mix of special b, crystal 120, and crystal 90. I can't change it, so I'm just gonna go with it. 2) the flaked maize, it's traditional, but what does it really add? I'm not opposed, but brewing tomorrow and not excited about an emergency trip to...

    does roeselare eat pumpkin?

thx for the reply. I think you're right on all counts. My main question was about canned pumpkin being fructose or starch, and whether it needed to be mashed to be edible to bugs (as opposed to sacch, which is a big yes). Basically I have a bunch of disparate ingredients and I'm trying...

    does roeselare eat pumpkin?

Trying to decide on a recipe for 2nd generation pitch onto roeselare dregs. Not sure what I'm going for, just experimenting. Ideally it's a partial mash, so I can brew something else on the same day. My thought process with the pumpkin is that it'll provide snax for the bugs if I just add it...

    simple pilsner q's

for posterity, here's the result: I wanted to simulate the melanoidins of a double decoction to bring out the malt flavor as much as possible. I used all pils, mashed at 135 for 30 min; I scooped out a bit less than half of the mash (barley and liquor) and heated it to 156F, held for 10 min...

    simple pilsner q's

I have 15lbs of pils malt I wanna use, and my buddy is requesting a pilsner. I cannot lager. I also have a half pound of Perle hops (AA~8%) and S-05 yeast. FYI- my efficiency has been super low, so I'm gonna use all 15 lbs. and just go 90min on both the mash and the boil. I'd love to be...

    obvious priming/bottling questions

lemme make sure I got this straight; when adding priming sugar/bottling: Just use a glass carboy and then clean the bugs out? There are many ways to do so, but that's a crazy amount of effort when I'm only using it for like a half hour. I feel like for 6 bucks I could just get a dedicated...

    obvious priming/bottling questions

How do you avoid contaminating your bottling bucket and all of your bottles? Getting a designated buggy bucket just for bottling seems silly, but any way around it seems overly complicated. Also, I assume that every bottle that once contained a sour cannot be reused for a non-sour?

    Hemp Seed

lol understatement. I have nothing helpful to add except that Wedge brewery in Asheville NC had a wicked good hemp-seed brown ale when I was there.

    amarillo/citra coming out nasty

I'm hesitant to let anyone else taste it cuz I don't really like it, but most folks who enjoy free beer seem to really enjoy it, compared to no beer at all.
