Thanks guys, good to know. I'll let you know how it comes out...should i wait for it to fall before taking any gravity readings, racking to secondary or bottling bucket?
I'm only on my 3rd brew so sorry for all the quesions. It's been a week and a day since i pitched brewed and pitched my yeast (made a starter from a vial of liquid) into a smoked porter. White foamy krausen rose up and started to settle which was great but now there is a layer of wet, gooey...
cool. But even if i made a bend in the screen and the screen was on the bottom, i don't undedrstand how more liquid would be able to get out becase the spigot hole is still a half inch off the bottom.
i did fill the cooler about half way with some hot tap water but did not heat the water on the stove or anything like that. I guess that will be my next test.
Hi All,
I just converted a 5 gallon igloo cooler to a mash tun. I plan on doing a partial mash Alakan Smoked porter clone. The kit i received has a total of 3.5 lbs of grain. I estimatedIi should be using about 5.25 quarts of water. was I did a few tests to see if it would hold temp and...
Thanks for the response. I did read through that link which is extremly helpful and my concern was maintaining temperture. I figured it would be easier to do so in a cooler and also start to get me used to procedures for all grain after the winter.
I just ordered a mini-mash kit from AHS that comes with 1.75 lbs base grains and 1.75 lbs of steeping grains. I plan on building a mash lauter tun from a round cooler and wasn't sure if a 5 gallon one would be too big for partial mash and if i was better off making one out of a 3 gallon cooler...
Looks like Austin Hombrew has a Sam Smith Nut Brown Ale clone kit. I never made it so i can't tell you much about it.

I've been thinking about doing a mini mash for my next brew. i don't have a ton of space or equipment and was wondering if putting the grain in a muslin/nylon bag holding at correct temp in kettle, then pull it out and ladle sparge water over bag into the kettle would work?
Thoughts?
