second brew, ring of sediment 1/2way up carboy?

I brewed an IPA the other night and after I aerated and pitched the yeast and moved it to my closet I noticed that about 6 inches up the bottom of the carboy there is a ring of sediment floating. Im new to homebrew so sorry if this is common, thanks for any help.

Any advantage to full boil v. partial boil?

Actually one quick question, how large of a brew pot do i need to do a 5gallon full boil? I've heard you need like 6.5 or 7 gallons to account for evaporation, so would a 9gallon (what I was planning on getting) work, or should I get a 10 or eleven? And if I do get a 10 or 11 should I get a...

Any advantage to full boil v. partial boil?

Awesome, thanks guys. Anyone have a thread on SG though, I would like to know exactly what I'm doing on my first brew day (when I get back to flagstaff ~ a week).

Any advantage to full boil v. partial boil?

Just wondering, for now I am doing partial mash brewing and will be buying a 9gallon brew pot. Is there any difference in quality by doing a full boil over a partial boil? I remember reading that there is a difference in color of the final beer, also that you have to make some adjustments in...

Buying brewpot, current partial mash future all grain

Thanks, I think I am going to buy 40qt from Austin Homebrew Supply (Austin Homebrew Supply). But about the second part of my question, when I am making my wort (partial mash) how much water do I add to the brew pot initially to make sure I have 5 gallons to the primary (if I'm not mistaken there...

Buying brewpot, current partial mash future all grain

I am looking for a brew pot (new to homebrewing) online and have a question. Should I buy a 7 or 8 gallon if I plan to all grain in the future? I figure the answer to that question is yes (why not), but I am also wondering that when I get the, say, 35qt brewpot do I use all 5 gallons in the wort...

    Starter yeast question

I'm still a little shady on the topic of starter yeast, is it just brewing a small batch of beer and pitching yeast into it and letting it sit a couple days, then adding it to the fermenter with the wort? Also, when you do brew your main batch do you add the wort to the primary that already...

I want to build an insulated box for fermenting

https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/4-6-cu-ft-fridge-10-1-cu-ft-fermentation-chamber-conversion-88554/ I think this is what I'm going to go with. Flagstaff is a big college town and I have already found convertable/working dorm fridges for only 25$. I'm hoping to start this project once I get...

I want to build an insulated box for fermenting

I did a little bit more searching to find the picture and ended up finding the DIY with pictures here https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/diy-fermentation-cabinet-86815/ . I think I'm going to follow these instructions but modify it to hold only 4 carboys. Thanks for the input though. Adam:mug:

I want to build an insulated box for fermenting

Hi- Im new to homebrewing (I've helped a friend with 3 batches and want to start my own) and am setting up/purchasing my own equipment. I saw a picture on these forums of a box-type thing that was insulated for fermenting a carboy at constant temperatures. I live in Flagstaff, AZ where (at the...
