Why Add Malt extract before Hops?

You can get the same acid in less boiling time by using more hops. For example, I whimped out today and decided it was too hot for an AG. (I brew in the kitchen) I used 0.5 oz of Sonnet for 3 gallons of Wiezen Beer from extract with a 30 minute total boil for 11 IBU. According to Beersmith I...

Have you looked at "Can't get good HEAD?" in this forum. The topics are closely related.

    Check list to get started.

+1 on the kettle, and its not as trivial as it sounds. (Been there, screwed that up.) There are posts on-line (not on this site of course) that will tell you its okay to use a smaller pot to boil then make-up the difference by adding water to the fermenter. Well it is, but, what they forget to...

    Belgian tripel question

I hate to be the junior guy who disagrees with two senior members but I don't think you can answer that question without knowing what kind of primary you are using. Most important, does it have a fermentation lock and does the lid fit tight enough that the lock actually bubbles as the...

    Cheap or Alternative Ferment Buckets?

I bought one of these about a month ago. My second batch in it is bubbling away happily. It really is vacuum tight. "The first ever screw top with built in turning handle for ease of opening and closing. The screw-top lid has an optional spout for easy pouring of your liquid or dry products...

Irish Red With Oats - Color Issues/Help

Hi, Just bottled my fourth batch of Irish Red starting with Saccharomyces House Irish Red grain bill and scaling back to 2.5 gal BIAB. 1. First batch as per recipe. 2. Second batch added 1lb of (minute) rice in mash and increased water to compensate. 3. Third batch deleted roasted barley...

    Half Batches

Hi, Right now I only BIAB in a 20 quart pot. I start with 4 gallons of water and just cut everything in half except the yeast (no starter). I tried mashing in a separate 8 quart pot then batch sparging but discovered I could get efficiency in the low seventies without the hassle. I was...

    Bitter Orange Peel In Kit

I've made a couple of kit Belgians with bitter orange peel. The addition was always with the last hops (5 min) just long enough to sterilize. I always left it (and the Corriander) in the primary. They came out with good orange an spice.

    2.5 gallon batch size equipment

I was in the same boat. I wanted to try all grain but I was not ready for a big investment until I saw what kind of results I could produce. Anyway, did my first 2.5 gallon batch yesterday. It was very little more trouble than an extract brew. I mashed in an 8qt pasta cooker at 1.5q/lb. I was...

Beer Recipe my girlfriend would like?

As close as I've come is an AHS Gold Seal Belgian Wit kit I made this winter. She almost liked it. Since I've started alternating brew days with Hard Cider and Raspberry Wine days. Cost a couple of extra pet carboys for the longer ferments but keeps peace in the family.
