My boil kettle broke the solder and leaked so I decided it was a good time to re-build it. I just re-melted the solder and it seemed to have sealed up nicely. My old set-up I just had a series of PVC fittings to house the connections and I had a 5500 watt Ultra Low Watt Density element (the...
OK. I switched with a ULWD. I see why it scorched. The mineral buildup must have gotten so thick that it insulated the element from the wort. The element did not get the cooling effect of the wort passing over it and it scorched the "scale" that was building up.
When I removed the old...
I just scorched the last two batches I made.
The thing is my element looks like it is encrusted with scale, it isn't blackened.
So what's going on here?
The element is just a simple 5500 Watt 240V single loop going out and back. It doesn't even fold back on itself.
The batch sizes...
Other information that may be pertinent:
15 gallon boil Kettle
5500W x 240V element
Mash in separate vessel, vorlauf, then boil.
100% to bring to boil, then turn down to 60% to maintain boil
O.G. of wort at point of pitching yeast is 1.038 - 1.042
I got my electric boil kettle set up with a 5500 W element.
Brewed a few batches and things tasted pretty good. Now the last two batches have a scorched flavor. Came on the forum today and BOOM already two threads on scorched beer. HBT is awesome.
I read through them and have a hard...

I see in your table you have Cascade 1 and Cascade 2. I take it that means two separate plants of same variety. However you have Cascade listed a number of other times in the table. Are these 3rd and 4th plants or are you returning to the same two and harvesting more?
sumbrewindude,
Do you recall anything about what went into the old Bock? Other than the rumors that they scraped the bottom of the vat, the only thing I remember hearing was the corn ingredient.
Well I've tried a number of faux bocks in an attempt at getting close to the old Point Bock but I'm dissappointed.
Does anyone remember the original Bock from Stevens Point brewery?
It was malty, dark, and very creamy smooth without too much toasty flavor.
I seem to remember someone...
I've upgraded to 10 gallon batches but I'm realizing that my 25-foot wort chiller may be inadequate. I'll give it another try with cold water running full blast though.
What are the advantages of a fast wort chill?
If I get a 50-footer, will it help much to use the 25-footer in an...
Here are pictures of my element housing. I "borrowed" some ideas from the heat sticks and from a brewing parts link someone gave me here.
In Picture 1 I have a slipjoint drain nut. I learned that it needs to be the 1.5-inch nut in order to get a watertight seal.
Picture 2 is the 1.5-inch...
Just curious why there is so much talk of efficiency on these forums?
For my brewing purposes I got into all-grain because it seemed like a slam dunk money saver over buying craft brews. A corona mill pays for itself by allowing to buy barley in bulk. I figure my consumables run the...
Ok the harbor freight drill sounds good.
Just for comparison: what is the rpm? Bothe Dewalt and Milwaukee make 1/2 inch drills that go up to 850 rpm. Is this harbor freight one even slower?
Well the xrp is out of reach.
I burnt out my Skil hammer drill trying to grind grain. I am just worried that I would do the same with a Dewalt and just throw away more money. When I needed a hammer drill to fix the garage it was easy to justify the expense. But I'm not sure I can justify...
Perhaps I mislead by calling it an air wrench which most people imagine the guys at the tire shop using to torque lug nuts with. I think the more accurate term would be air "ratchet". It looks more like a ratchet wrench than a drill.
If th only drawback is the noise of the compressor and...
