    What's the % ABV?

I made a very strong beer with 12.2% ABV. I decided to tame it down so I made another beer with 4.2% ABV and blended the two in a 50/50 blend by volume. So equal parts of each beer. I want to determine the % ABV of the blended result - short of a lab analysis. I know it's not a simple linear...

    Good deal on 2-row?

I've purchased over 150 lb from them. Good folks, easy to work with and good prices. If you are close to Portland, it rocks.

    Stuck fermentation?

A couple of ideas for your consideration regarding the cause and a course of action but first, how did you pitch the yeast? Did you create a starter and let it go to a full krausen before pitching? Was the temperature of the yeast close to the temperature of the wort you pitched into? The...

    Good deal on 2-row?

Good grain and a good price. Many of the local breweries use Great Western 2-row as their base malt. Local Home Brew Shops in Portland sell it for between $42-$48 per 50lb bag. What is shipping going to cost you?

    Brew pubs in Portland, OR?

All very good suggestions. I personally think the food at Widmer is excellent and the beers are good as well. Hopworks is a great place but a smashing success and a bit hard to get into sometimes. Rogue, Dechutes, Bridgeport, Rock Bottom, and Tugboat are all brewpubs in Downtown (Full Sail...

    Anyone using BeerSmith regularly ?

After years of homebrewing I finally decided it was time for a program to help me with the record keeping. I was surprised to find that Brewsmith has much more and even though I have only had it a month I am using it regularly to formulate new recipes and predict water temperatures and so...

    Is the water used important?

In general, I do not like the taste of chlorine which is why I do not disinfect with bleach. Good/bad are relative. To me it is about the taste so I try to eliminate what I consider a bad taste. Hope that helps.

    Is the water used important?

Water is by far the largest component of your beer - either by volume or by weight. The mineral content of your brewing water as well as the pH have a huge impact on the taste of the product you produce. Here in Portland, OR we have been having quite a discussion over some time about the local...

    Brew pubs in Portland, OR?

The Crowne Plaza Hotel is in NE Portland, close to the convention center. Downtown is actually across the Willamette River (on the West side). Within walking distance, hmm, no brewpubs I know of within 15 min. walk of the Crowne Plaza. But, the Widmer Gasthaus is pretty close to there (about...

Anyone been to Oktoberfest in Munich?

Sorry to say I have never been there. Having said that I have heard a ton about it from my brother. He is in the 6th edition of his book, "The Beer Drinkers Guide to Munich". You can check out his website Beer Drinker's Guide to Munich

Where'd You Guys Get Your Rhizomes?

How much beer do you drink?

House rules: Everyone has to pour their own. No drinking before noon. Always use small glasses 'cause big glasses will get you hammered fast. Seriously, I only drink a pint or so per day. That, of course, is an estimate of the number of small glasses.

    Infected in the Keg?

Another possibility is that your gas line has been contaminated. The way to prevent that is to have an in line check valve as close to the gas input connection on your tap as you can make it. Gas line contamination can occur if the keg pressure is higher than your gas line pressure. When you...
