    Barley Crusher Fail

I took the advice of this forum and bought a new Monster Mill MM2. I used it for the first time this morning, and holy crap that thing is a beast. For anyone struggling with a failing Barley Crusher, I definitely recommend an MM2.

What's a good base American wheat beer recipe?

A bit late to the party, I know, but here's my house wheat beer. Makes a great Shandy. I'm brewing this again on Saturday. OG = 1.051, FG = 1.010, IBU = 20, SRM = 4.6. 4.5# White Wheat malt 4.5# Briess 2-row 1# Munich 9L Rice hulls optional mash at 150 0.65 oz Perle (8%) @60 mins 0.50 oz...

Fermenting bucket have a seal lid with a hole for air lock or no

Hi yvonnars - Yes, you need a lid with a hole for the airlock for your primary fermentation bucket. You don't need an o-ring, however. The buckets I use have lids with holes, but no o-rings; the lid just snaps right on. Simply resting the lid that you have on the bucket might also work, if it is...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I'll be brewing a Rhenish Alt, but I tell my wife it's an American Wheat.

    My first APA

I would not use S-04. Fermentis Safale US-05 is much better for an APA.

    Beer tastes sweet...again

ryanbullen - If you don't want to drink a bunch of sweet beer, it is possible to add bitterness after fermentation by boiling some hops in water and adding that to your beer. For example, boiling 1 ounce of Magnum hops (13.2% AA) in a gallon of water for an hour would add about 65 IBUs to 5...

    Most overrated home-brew topics?

Everything is overrated. This forum has 540,850 threads and 7,414,670 posts. If that isn't overkill then I don't know what is.

Using Blue 5 Gallon Water Jugs for Starsan

I keep mine for around 3-4 months before dumping and making a fresh batch. I used to test with ph strips but stopped doing that a long time ago.

    Why no love for bleach?

A gallon of bleach is cheap but Star San is too when used properly. A 16 oz jug of StarSan costs $16.95 at my LHBS, which is $1.06 per ounce. The directions are to mix 1 ounce of Star San in 5 gallons of water. I keep this solution in a bucket and it is good for 3 months before needing...

Do small malt additions (1-2%) have a significant impact on flavor?

The black patent in these examples are for color adjustment. I've never used caramunich or made a saison, so I can't speak to that. I see a lot recipes, in places like BYO Magazine for example, that call for 2 oz of some specialty malt like biscuit or victory in a 14 lb grain bill. I...

    Barley Crusher Fail

I do the backwards slightly then forward technique every time. But come to think of it, mine stopped working reliably when I stopped blowing it out with my shopvac after every use. Guess I just got lazy. I'll go back to doing that and see if it helps. Someone else in another thread reported...

    Barley Crusher Fail

Yeah, I've read those threads. They're a few years old now (at least the ones that I found). I was hoping for some newer info. Guess I'll send it back and starting looking for something more reliable. It was a good little mill. Worked for 8 years with no problems. :mug:

    Barley Crusher Fail

For the past few months I've been having trouble with my Barley Crusher. The slave roller will slip or fail to turn at all, making it very difficult to crush grain. I just spent an hour hand cranking through 12 lbs of grain 1 cup at a time. I've taken it apart twice in the last 2 months...

    Does anyone else dislike US-05?

I think US-05 performs well, but I agree with some others here that it is just a bit too boring for me. The only American yeasts I use anymore are Wyeast 1272 American Ale II and Wyeast 1332 Northwest Ale (which is actually from an English brewery). Wyeast 1028 London Ale is also a good fit for...

    Whole Hops: What to Do?

Just because they are whole cones doesn't mean they have to be used exclusively for dry hopping. They can be used for bittering, flavor, and aroma additions in the boil as well. I use whole hops 99% of the time.
