Does everyone worry and fuss about their first batch?

I definitely over though the first batch. Then the second. But over tome you get better at the techniques and it gets easier. When folks say they get fussy over every batch it doesn't mean they worry lime the first batch. They are trying to get things just so but they know most of the...

    Flashlight to fermenting wort?

It takes pretty long to make beer skunky. Hours in flourescent light according to Papazian and my experience. Relax.

    star san question

Starsan will last a long time. I was amazed how for I could get with starstan and a vinator. Ideally get some litmus paper and test it for a PH <=3 and as long as it is you're good to go. You'll be pleased at how long it lasts.

    Will my bottles explode?

I've had poor yeild on a few batches and didn't alter the priming sugar and had no troubles. I wouldn't worry. Though I put my bottles in bomb shelters as a matter of course. so far I haven't needed it.

Propane Burner Question - sq-14 time to hear water

That doesn't sound right to me. My burner, ( I don't know off hand if it is a SQ-10) roars when it is at full throttle. Try turning lighting the burner with the gas on "just a little". Then bring the flow up to full over a couple of seconds. Some of those pressure thingys limit gas flow if...

    Temperature control in the cold

I too live in Wisconsin. I look forward to lager season because of the colder fermentation temperatures. But keep in mind that your air temperature and the temperature in your fermentation closet are different and +1 to JFR that fermentation is exothermic. You can likely ferment nicely in a...

    Liquid Yeast and Krausen

I usually expect more krausen from liquid yeast than dry. And yeah, while there is krausen there is fermentation. Be patient.

    various newbie questions!

I put the open grain bag in a large measuring cup and pour in the grains. I wouldn't allow a glass thermometer to be incontact with a pot bottom when heat is applied. I don't use floating thermometers for this, I use dip/ dial type. I generally steep with the heat off. You won't lose a lot...

    5 gallons = 42 bottles (12oz)

My yield went up when 1) I became more careful about starting with a full batch my adding sufficient makeup water and 2)I got braver about racking the beer into secondary or bottling containers. A little gunk from the bottom can get racked, especially to secondary, without trouble so there is...

OXICLEAN leaves a white film on bottles...

I use one wash with Oxyclean and a second with dilute vinegar. The result is a pleasingly clean and non-slippery bottle. Of course I sanitize on bottling day.
