Really! Just use water. Boil the water first If you are concerned about contamination. You could use a hose and stick it in a jar of any liquid of your choosing.
I have never had an issues with water getting sucked back into the fermentation bucket or carboy.

As long as you're still producing CO2 you should not have a problem. Next time you have a full batch, use a hose instead of an airlock. Place one end in the stopper and the in a container of water. If you bubble over the tube will carry the over flow away and into the water container.

Sometimes it takes a season or two to start growing vigorously. Each year the roots will spread and produce more vines. I have found some varieties do extremely well and other barely produce an once or two.

I use faucet water for the wort boil. if i add water to complete the 5 gal batch, I use filtered water. My tap water is ok, no sulfur or real bad odors.
