Best way to clean inside of Better Bottle?

I've used a Better Bottle for my last few batches, and haven't had too much trouble cleaning it out since I have a spray wand but this last batch must've left some extra stubborn kraussen. Does anyone have any good tips for removing this? I soaked it overnight in water, but that didn't help...

OG significantly low for Blue Moon clone

It was the extract kit. I think I also lost more to evaporation than usual, so the 1/2-3/4 gallon of wort that was left in the pot was extra concentrated... so I had to compensate with more water poured into the fermenter which further watered it down. I guess I won't worry about it too...

OG significantly low for Blue Moon clone

Hello everyone - yesterday I attempted to make the Blue Moon clone kit from AHS and it looks like my OG reading is significantly low. The recipe calls for an expected OG of 1.048, however mine was closer to 1.038. This is only my 4th batch of beer I've tried to make, but this is the first time...

Anyone tried Blue Moon clone from AHS?

Hello everyone - just wondering if anyone has tried the Blue Moon clone kit from Austin HomeBrew Supply? I ordered it this weekend, so I'll be giving it a try in the next week or two. How'd it turn out? Did you make a starter, or just pitch the liquid yeast right in? Thanks for the...

    Cleaning and Sanitizing Bottles...OMG

For my first attempt at bottling, I rinsed existing bottles as I drank them - they were poured into a glass, never drank directly from them. On bottling day I put them all in the dishwasher and ran on the highest temperature cycle with the sanitize feature. I didn't even remove any of the...

    Yeast as a laxative??

I've heard similar info about yeast being a natural laxative - it's even mentioned in John Palmer's "How to Brew", and that seems to be considered the homebrewing bible... so the general opinion here is that it's not true? Or at least not significant to worry about?

    Opinions on PET bottles?

I agree - I wasn't referring to homebrew out of a bottle, but more like the new plastic bottles that Miller Lite recently came out with. And before anyone gives me crap about drinking Miller Lite... I only drink it when nothing else is available! :)

    Opinions on PET bottles?

Can some of the more experienced members here post their opinions on using PET bottles instead of glass? I still think it's a bit odd to drink beer out of a plastic bottle, but perhaps they're worth it. Potential advantages I can think of are: 1.) Easier to handle/transport than glass...

    Correct formula for calculating ABV?

It seems like there are several different formula's floating around which allow you to calculate the ABV - some more complicated than others. The simplest one I've seen is: ABV = (OG-FG) * 131 Just wondering if that's the "HBT approved" formula, or if there's another one? Thanks!

Do you REALLY save any money by brewing your own beer?

This thread kicks ass. Not only did I spark a huge debate, but I also learned the meaning of an EAC... which I will be sure to start adding in my everyday conversations now... :mug:

First batch is bottled, how long is the risk period for "grenades"

Why would using a secondary cut down on the chance of creating bottle bombs? I would think that if you just left it sitting in the primary for the additional time you were planning on keeping it in the secondary, then it'd be equivalent.

Do you REALLY save any money by brewing your own beer?

I agree that labor shouldn't be factored in. I posted the question yesterday morning before going to work, then checked the responses when I got home. When I saw something like 95 responses I thought there'd be lots of great ideas on ways to save money with certain recipes, or by shopping at...

How does headspace relate to carbination level (when using priming sugar)?

OK, thanks - those posts were all good information. So it sounds like I did it about right then - either fill all the way to the lip of the bottle, or slightly below... and once the bottle filler is removed you'll have somewhere between 1-2" headspace, and this should adequately carbonate the...

    Fermentation question

I'm still a bit confused on this. So when a recipe mentions the proper temp is 68-70 for example, would you set the temperature controller for the fridge to 68-70, or should it be set to 63-65 to compensate for the additional heat inside the fermenter? It sounds like you'd want to use the...

How does headspace relate to carbination level (when using priming sugar)?

At the risk of asking a dumb question, can someone explain HOW carbonation works? I'm talking about when using priming sugar, not forced carbonation. The reason I'm asking is because I just bottled my first batch of beer two weeks ago - being overly paranoid about the bottles exploding, I left...
