Just in case it had not been mentioned .. A drilled universal stopper (I think that is what it is called) turned upside down and slid up a small racking cane works very well. The top of the stopper fits right over the top of the bottle and makes a nice seal... easy. May have been mentioned...
Long story... Purchased a "California Common" style beer from AHS and followed the directions. I noticed it was a San Fan Lager yeast and thought it was cool since all beer I had made had been made with ale yeast. Well, 10 days later it is still bubbling (slowly). I got to thinking about...
"Is it just like carbonation bubbles, or thick yeasty foam?"
Well, to be honest it is both.. It is a thick yeasty foam with little bubble clumps dispersed throughout.
Is the reason the suggestion is to rack from primary after 2 weeks because of the style of beer? It is supposed to be...
I just opened the primary bucket on a AHS Sunshine Wheat that has been in the primary for 8 days and no airlock activity for 4 days now. On the side of the bucket I can see where the krausen(?) used to be about 2.5 inches high on the bucket. Floating on top I have all of this thick foam which...
Thanks for the replies. That link above made me thirsty, good info. Since I did not recall that flavor it surprised me it was in there. I ended up putting 1/2 the amount of orange/coriander asked for in the recipe because I wimped out and did not want to take a chance. I should just trust the...
So we are in Colorodo a few weeks ago and I had to try the real Fat Tire while I was there. It did not last long and then I tried New Belgiums Sunshine Wheat and it was very good, my wife liked it alot. Anyway, I order ther kit from AHS to give it a try. The kit includes 1/4 ouce crushed...
Note to self: Buy a stainless steel auto-siphon and high temp tubing. Other than that it went pretty well. Waiting on bubbles now.. Thanks for all the help.
Great info from all. I am about finished with the mini-mash and will start the 60 minute boil soon. I had never considered using the auto-siphon to transfer the wort. I had always just dumped into in the primary bucket (using hop bags). With this mini-mash I end up with about 4 gallons to the...
1) I read alot about hop utilization during the boil and have a question. Is it the sugars in the boil that increase utilization? If I mini-mash w/ some 2-Row is their enough sugar in the boil to do a late addition with the rest of the liquid extract in the last 15 minutes of the boil. Or are...
I will be modifying my setup to include a stainless steel braid. After all my trouble by original gravity ended up 1.060 - so I am pretty happy with that. I am sure it will be MUCH easier with the SS braid. Thanks.
Stuck mash and sparge.... I tried to do this by making one of the 5 gallon round coolers from target. I ordered a mini-mash from AHS. Poured the gran into 170 degree mash water. After 45 minutes it is stuck... will not drain out of the valve. Does anyone have any tips. I used the SS false...
PREFACE: This is my first time doing this - just extract/steeping before now.
This is a AHS mini-mash kit which does come with very good directions. But, I have made one of those 5 gallon round Target cooler mash tun and things dont match up since my steps are a little different, I think...
Setting: Christmas party.. 25 newbies (and their spouses) .. They all know my new hobby but .. can it really taste good??
Natural Progression: 1) This is pretty good. Lotsa flavor.
2) How did he make this?? This is good beer...
