My latest flight board... Res oak, brass-pinned "handle" - ebony stain on the handle, walnut on the "guard" and left the "blade" natural - has enough poly on it to use a mark and wipe to allow writing the tap numbers directly on it.

I learned it helps if you are making beer to wear a spiffy brewing jacket with skulls on it. Also, it helps a lot to say "BOOM" when doing any hop additions

not sure what got to them, but diatomaceous earth is your friend - takes out most every nasty there is and no bed side-effects - kinda like star-san for hops, dont fear the flakes

Had an inspiration to do a little garage time... The bottle caps (set is numbered 1-9) have magnets glued on the back and I inset a small steel washer on the board, makes for easy identification of what was what with multiple taps.

A lil licorice root (available at health food / natural food stores) in the last few minutes of a boil can provide a distinct licorice note - never personally tasted hairy eyeball, so YMMV

I'd say stick to something wood and VERY solid, for a top, you might look at having a local sheet metal/ac company bend you some metal to fit as a "cap" over the wood, ( you could go mild steel and then have it powder coated, or for a little more stainless steel sheet) did this for work benches...
